Oh Gawd - a movie about whiny ass amerikan women

there is a DAMN GOOD REASON why these women do not deserve children !!!

how can a person really determine if a person DESERVES a child. Everyone will have an opinion that seems solely correct to them.

I think that's the point of the whole film. They all sit around criticizing each other and by the end you see the faults of all of the women. When it's all said and done, does anybody "deserve" to have children?

Let me begin by saying that I rarely criticize a film for it's lack of realism and I don't really intend to criticize, but... this film is being looked upon as a cautionary tale.

We have two children, both adopted in Latin American countries. Our son was born in Peru in 1990. We traveled there and spent four months navigating the ins and outs of a very arcane legal system while a terrorist war was raging. Public corruption placed roadblocks in our path at every turn, but through it all our lawyers and their families were pillars of support. Also, throughout our stay we encountered adoptive parents from several countries and in every case both mother and father were present.

In 1993 our daughter was born in Guatemala. Again our lawyers--a father and daughter team--were exceptional. We completed the process in five days with no beaureacratic roadblocks and treated the balance of our two-week stay as a vacation. In fact, the only delay we encountered was caused by the American Embassy in Guatemala City because the Consul General at the time did not support trans-racial adoptions.

We have several friends who have been through the adoption process in Mexico and none of them describe the corruption illustrated in the film.

For us, the adoption process had its ups and downs. Now, of course, the kids are teenagers and we face challenges that no Peruvian bureaucrat can match.

BTW: Mexico is not a "South American" country.

martini-29: I loved your story. I am in strong opposition to careless child bearing, probably in no small part to the fact that most of my female friends from high school had tons of babies shortly after graduation. I think it's irresponsible to have children when you are not prepared and I really don't see the need for more dumb lazy spoiled children. That said, if couples do want to raise a child, I support their efforts to adopt children from countries and from situations that are less fortunate than those that we live in. That's a noble deed to raise someone else's child as your own and I commend you for it.
