Chuuji die?

Did Chuuji die at the end of the movie? I couldn't figure it out. THat scene of the girl just sitting there alone playing his harmonica kinda made it seem that way, but I'd like to know for sure.

i'm not sure about it as well.maybe she sat there alone because chuuji brought kenji to a hospital or something. but otherwise she could have come with him, couldn't she? another hint to his death could be that he is shown as a child with his father at the end. i think it's something like an open ending.

i'm sure he was killed, otherwise the gangsters wouldve just left after they killed kenji.

I would say yes.

The girl pats her belly lovingly and picks up the harmonica as to suggest she thinks her baby will take after (his?) father.

Like passing the torch, she's passing the harmonica.

I'm sure he died. The killers had an easy shot with him being on stage alone.
Also earlier in hte movie his girlfriend talks about their child. She says she hopes it will look exactly like Chuuji, but doesn't know why she really thinks and says that. IMO it's a clear hint that Chuuji will day on the same day.

Of course he died, as did his father - the end would be the afterlife, where he can have a happy life with his dad, the kind that neither of them ever did. Sounds kind of soft for those who think Miike is a shock director only, but his expertise at storytelling comes from various sources.

I'd say this ending is more like a Kurosawa, or even a Fellini film. Although it is vague, there is only one conclusion that can be reached - hopefully through the storytelling of a great (greatest living maybe?!?!) director - you will come to the proper conclusion.
