The town is called Essington. I was born there and was about the same age as the charactors in the film. The area of Essington that Anita was from is called Haywards Corner and Sneyd Lane. It is just outside the main village. At the beginning of the film there is a pub shown. Its not the real one but is meant to be "The Old Mitre" which is still there and was once ran by my grandfather. I think that I once met the real Anita at the play park on Sneyd Lane when she defended me from some local bullies. I was about 12 at the time (1972). The accent is a bit "put on" but is not far from the real thing.

Well I wasn't born in Essington but Wednesfield, and I live about a mile or so away from Essington. It was fun to watch the film because I could recognise some of the references in the movie, as I pretty much grew up in the Working Mens Club on High Hill! I would assume that the fair would have been "ova Ashma" :-) The Minerva Off Licence used to sell much better sweets than at the club, we always used to nip round there to get our supply!

Looking up Sneyd Lane, Essington on Google Map, at the end of Sneyd Lane is the M6 highway now. Which, sadly follows the film verbatim.
So this was - and still is - a real place..
