My thoughts on the blind kids scene

UGH! When I first watched that scene, I truly felt sick, I mean seriously what the? Why would kids willingly crawl on broken glass. But then I thought about it more and well, I'm not exactly sure if it happened but I took it metaphorically after over thinking it.

Lets say the doll represents May and the glass box is her 'safety bubble' if you like. The blind kids represent the present people in her life (Adam, Polly, etc). All her life May has lived in this safe bubble not interfering with other people but when she begins to come in contact with them, her bubble is burst (glass box broken) the people claw at her, tearing her apart, causing her to damage (kids crawling ripping apart the doll) thus making May to become unhinged, crazy, psychotic. May then tries to save herself (May holding the doll close) but it's too late, the damage has been done, she is broken (mentally).

I hope this makes sense.

Yes and I also believe that everytime the glass box cracks, it means her mind is beginning to crack too. She is losing it.
Notice when she takes the doll for the kids, there are no cracks. So it might mean it is all in her mind.

Just watched this film after over ten years since I first saw it. Wow, Angela and all the cast are truly amazing.

I don't think the kids willingly crawled on the glass. They were blind, and then if you remember they are all screaming and crying when it's happening. But yes the scene was presented in a very strange manner and didn't seem real but it was probably just what May was seeing in her head and no what actually happened. What actually happened was a bunch of blind kids got scratched the hell out of by broken glass.

Only people with money say that money doesn't matter.

By virtue of being blind, the kids also represent the fact that no one sees May's dilemma. They only see her awkwardness on the surface, but they don't see her inner turmoil. They are therefore blind to her character as whole.

I also felt like the kids were supposed to be an ironic reflection of her. Unlike them, she has two eyes that actually work, but is unhappy because one of them is unappealing to behold.
