a central character is a loner/misfit desperately searching for love/companionship but ends up losing it when rejected. The ending should be bleak and depressing.

Any suggestions?

heathers , ghost world , The Virgin Suicides , welcome to the dollhouse . have you seen any of these? thomas grayling

Thanks for the feedback but I've seen all of those films.

Essentially, what I'm really looking for is a movie similar to May in the sense that it portrays a loner, desperately trying to fit in but is rejected by those around her and snaps by the end (revenge/taking the lives of others to fulfill a void).

Trust me. After reading your specific criteria, I know you'll like "Blood Moon" (aka "Wolf Girl")
It's about a poor, misunderstood circus freak who does exactly what you want her to do.

And, of course, there's "Carrie." Duh.

I would really suggest "Alyce" featuring James Duval and Jade Dornfeld. Nothing can be exactly like May but it has a very similar darkness and flow and they both have James Duval in it (the guy she ments on the bench with the mohawk) You should really give it a chance if you stay until the end it is very rewarding and 'May" and 'Alyce will always hold aspecial place in my insane heart lol.

Perhaps you've seen this movie, this thread is a bit dated, but there is a movie called "Enter the Dangerous Mind". But if you have netflix, it will be called "Snap". But basically it is about a musician, socially awkward and alone, gets rejected, goes on rampage, as you requested. It's neat, has a little twist at the end. A bit of a psychological thriller as well. But I enjoyed it. Here is the link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2229377/?ref_=nv_sr_1

In Netflix here (USA), its called the original title: "Enter The Dangerous Mind".
Maybe they changed it back. Netflix is always doing odd things like that.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?

It doesn't end in the character taking revenge, but the Tracey Fragment has a similar (albeit more realistic) mood to me.

Also, He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not, for skewed perception!

There's this Peruvian film called La Teta Asustada (The Milk of Sorrow), that was nominated for the best foreign film Oscar a few years ago, where the lead character is a girl whose mother was raped when pregnant with her, and hence has a potato inside her vagina in order to prevent any such thing from happening to her. She is also seemingly deathly terrified of interacting with the outside world, especially men. When I saw May, it reminded me a lot of the aforementioned film, particularly the horrible awkwardness that both the lead characters deploy when trying to interact with others. The Milk of Sorrow is a far darker and heavier film than May though. There's very little to smile or laugh about.

Check out 'Spiral'. It's like a male version of May.

Definitely "Carrie", the same actress from May in that one also.

"Fade to Black", with Dennis Christopher as a lonely young man who is addicted to movies. He meets a very beautiful Marilyn Monroe lookalike and his obsession with her causes his own downfall.

Plus he kills a few people old movie style :).

There's an Australian movie called "The Loved Ones." It's all about a girl who's unlucky in love and, like Miss Canaday, does something about it. Only difference is that the Aussie movie makes "May" look like something from the Disney Studio.
