The Book and Love Story and Ryan O'Neil and a sick Ali

Sort of funny to me. Bob Evans was so much a part of our collective consciousness when he was in his heyday I, for one, think of him as always sort of being there. Not clear I know.

Anyway... in the book (don't recall it in the movie) when Ali MacGraw was in the hospital hemmoraging or some awful thing, Evans asked Ryan O'Neil if he was going to visit. O'Neil (according to Evans) blew him off and simply never showed up.

Why? Hell, if someone asked me to visit a deathly ill coworker I would put personal feelings to the side and go. What happened to O'Neil to make him so angry?

I generally do not devote much energy to fanboy stuff but this particular episode stood out and really made me wonder.

Thanks for your thoughts.

From what I have read Ryan is not exactly the most reliable of people. Check on his ex wives, girlfriends and own children for an example.

I don't know much about Ryan O'Neal's private life, and probably he, like many actors (with the child in them) can't be looked up to as the greatest role model. We may have gotten one clue of that in the last few years, when he and a son were arrested for something, the details of which I have no knowledge of. On the other hand, we should bear in mind the opening phrase from THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE, the gist of which was, "There are three sides to every story. Yours, Mine, and the truth." In the film itself we were reminded of how infuriating it could be for people to write anything about you (Wikipedia devotees should especially beware), as Evans experienced while being connected to a murder he probably had no part of. In short, just because Ryan O'Neal's "ex wives, girlfriends and own children" might have written or spoken disparagingly of him, who is to say whether they were being objectively factual?

From the surface, it doesn't look like his daughter, Tatum O'Neal, turned out too badly. Mostly, from what little I know about Ryan O'Neal's private life, I found it touching that he didn't abandon Farrah Fawcett as she lay dying (assuming these news reports were true), and even asked her to marry him one last time, a proposal she finally accepted.

unfortunately, tatum, redmond and griffin o'neal have had serious drug problems just as their father. she lost custody of her children due to her addiction. both boys have been in jail. such a sad, sad family. i know she's trying to stay well and i hope they all can get out of their horrible lifestyles.

Ryan O Neil is one of the worst Hollywood fathers - PERIOD!!
He ruined his kids lives. If you think Tatum turned out fine, check her autobiography. She comes across very believable and even if half of what she said about Ryan were true, he needs to be locked up.

And they all love him

Some people just don't know what to say to deathly ill people so they just stay away. It happened to me twice with a friend and a relative.

Haven't seen the movie, but the story in the book goes like this:

Robert Evans and wife Ali McGraw are attending a party just after the New York premiere of Love Story. Ali, who is 7 months pregnant, starts hemorraging (spoiler alert: both mom and baby turn out fine). Later, Evans is distraught in the hospital waiting room as the doctors tell him the baby may have to be delivered 2 months early, as both its life and Ali's are in danger. Evans informs Ryan by phone he will have to cover for Ali at the Boston premiere. O'Neal refuses, saying if she doesn't go then he won't. Evans makes it clear that the baby's life is in danger, but Ryan states that because he has no financial stake in the film he won't cover for Ali, who does have a stake. Evans also wrote that Ryan never inquired later about the health of Ali or the baby.

With what else I've read about O'Neal, I believe every word of it.
