not a funny movie?

Maybe it's just me, or maybe the humor was understated, but with the exception of a few minutes at the end this movie frequently had me in stitches. After having seen _Ying xiong_ (Hero) and _Shi mian mai fu_ (The House of Flying Daggers), plus bits of _Wo de fu qin mu qin_ (The Road Home), I should have known that I can't make it through a Yimou Zhang film--not even a comic one--without some tears.

Yimou Zhang really is a master of colors and emotions, and I look forward to his next release, as well as his older movies I'm planning to rent. Anyway, just because you cry in the movie doesn't mean it's not funny.

I thought this film was really funny too, the main guy is hilarious. What does he call his girlfriend, fat mama or something? I was cracking up through most of this

I believe he called her 'Chunky Mama'. Now, I personally didn't find it that funny. It was good-natured, and I enjoyed it, but there were only a few times that I actually laughed out loud.

I laughed when he called her "chunky mama', but not because he as making a joke. I laughed because that was a very Chinese thing to say about an aquaintence. Having lived in America for the last 8 years, I have forgotten that difference in Chinese langauge from American. Chinese will often call someone 'skinny', 'fat', or even 'ugly' without meaning malicous. I remember listen to two girl friends of mine discussing a third friends new dress. They told the girl her dress looked ugly on her. It was a statement of fact and no one even blinked an eye. I was often call the "super skinny." It is like a pet name only not as intimate.

I found the movie humorous. The characters were wonderfully portrayed. The situations were well written without over turning the theme of loneliness that was more central to the movie.
