Vengeance 2001 Review

So with the Alliance dead and buried, we need to have an undisputed champion crowned. 4 guys, 2 matches the winners of the first 2 meet in the finals. Paul Heyman was fired the night after SS and Jerry Lawler made his triumphant return to a big pop. The siblings sold their WCW/ECW shares to Ric Flair and he is now partners with McMahon who has been having random ulcers for the past month. Your hosts are JR and The Kang.

Vince walks out and burns 10 minutes of ppv time by complaining about Rock shoving his face in Rikishis ass until Flair comes out and shuts him up so we can get to the actual show.

Match #1

Scotty And Albert Vs European Champion Christian And Test

Scotty and Albert dance around Vince and he walks off in a huff:) Christian starts with Scotty and gets taken down. Test and Albert go next. Albert splashes Test for 2. Albert knocks Christian off the apron and Scotty comes in to pummel Test in the corner, but he gets clotheslined and beat up. The heels work him over. Scotty superkicks Test and makes the hot tag to Albert, who and he avalanches both heels. Giant swing?.....gets 2 on Christian. Test pulls him out and they brawl, leaving Scotty to try a bulldog, but Christian counters with a ddt. Christian tries his own Worm (heh), but Albert breaks it up, and Test gives boots him for 2. Heel miscommunication leads to Test taking the worm from Scotty then Christian strolls into a baldo bomb and gets pinned at 6:36. I would not have expected Scotty and Albert to win there. Nothing special. 1 1/2 star.

Match #2

Intercontinental Championship Match

Edge Vs William Regal

Regal was the first to join the kiss my ass club, and has since started the brass knucks gimmick of his career. The ref checks for brass knuckles, and finds nothing. Edge clotheslines him and gets a missile dropkick to send Regal outside. Regal posts him and tosses him into the apron. Regal clothesline gets 2. Edge gets a sunset flip. Regal counters by kneeing him in the neck. Edge cradle gets two. Edge comes back with a neckbreaker and clothesline, into an Edge-O-Matic for 2. Northern lights suplex gets 2. Edge charges and hits elbow, but manages to alleyoop Regal out of the ring. He charges off the apron, but runs into the stairs. Regal finds some brass knuckles, taped to the ringpost? Back in, Tiger Driver gets two for Regal. Edge comes back with an edgezuigiri. Edge rolls him up for 2. Backslide gets 2. Regal pulls out another pair of Tiger Drivers, for 2. Regal gets frustrated and fishes out the knucks and gets speared by Edge and pinned in the process at 9:03. 2 1/2 stars.

Angle yacks at Flair about how he's gonna win it all. Flair agrees with everything he says:)

Match #3

Brother Vs Brother

Matt Hardy Vs Jeff Hardy

Special Referee: Lita

Jeff grabs an armbar, Matt takes him down and slams him for 2. Chopfest follows. Matt hotshots Jeff, and a clothesline for 2. Sleeper is reversed by Jeff, but Matt suplexes out. Second rope legdrop misses and Jeff lariats him to come back. Jeff’s own version of the "yodelling" legdrop gets 2. That's the one thing that bugged me about Matt, he always would yell HUUUHHH!!! whenever doing the legdrop or twist of fate, just got old after the first season. Jeff goes up and gets hung in the tree of woe, but Lita pulls him out of it, drawing boos for her biased refereeing. Ventura would of been on her like **** on velcro for helping out, and Monsoon would of argued that he was in the ropes. They took sides on opposite sides of the fence, depending if it was a face or heel caught in the ropes:) Matt rolls Jeff up for 2. Matt tosses him and tries a powerbomb off the apron, reversed to a goofy rana by Jeff. Back in, Jeff flips in and hurts his knee, and Matt goes after it. Jeff tries a baseball slide, but his knee is too damaged. Jeff blocks a Twist of Fate attempt and goes low. Backdrop suplex and he goes up, but gets crotched and slammed. Matt sets up another Twist of Fate, but Jeff reverses, and Matt reverses again to a backslide for 2. A slowish count aswell. Jeff sunset flips him, but Matt blocks with the ropes for another slow 2. Jeff cradles for 2. Matt stomps him down, but Jeff goes up again, and again gets crotched. Matt follows him up, but Jeff shoves him off and swantons him for the pin at 12:28. Matt was supposed to be the heel, but he seemed to be getting stuck with all the slow counts. Also, his foot was on the ropes in the final pin but Jeff pulled his foot off the ropes and Lita didn't notice it either. So he got screwed over by the both of them. But he's the bad guy because Jeff was being an idiot and sacrificed the tag titel unification match for a spot monkey spot. Im going 1 1/2 star. It just wasn't done well. Crowd was annoyed, nobobdy really wanted them to break up. They were back together again for the Rumble before Matt finally had enough of Jeff's one upping BS when he cut ahead of him in line for an IC title match and kicked Jeff to the curb and left for Smackdown. Just because Bret/Owen rocked, doesn't mean that every brother team should be broken up. Infact I say none of them should be because they can't live up to the Hart feud. It's the kind of storyline that can only be done once IMHO.

Match #4

Tag Team Championship Match

The Dudley Boyz Vs Kane And The Big Show

Kane boots D-Von and cleansf house and the faces beat up Bubbbles. Show powerslam gets 2. Sideslam on D-Von gets 2. Kane tosses both Dudleyz and follows with a bad tope. Show spanks Stacy:) Back in, Dudleyz catch Kane with a neckbreaker and Bubba clips him to set up the whazzup!!! Double flapjack, but Kane no sells and takes both out. Tag to Show, and it falls apart as Kan hits Show by accident. Kane throws Bubba out, but stops to argue with his partner. Show boots Bubba, but then hits Kane by mistake and the Dudleyz hotshot him into an exposed turnbuckle for the pin at 6:46. 1 star.

Match #5

Hardcore Championship Match

Rob Van Dam Vs The Undertaker

Taker recently turned heel, shoving JR's face in McMahons ass. He looks like such a prick with short hair. Rob kicks. Taker charge hits elbow, senton gets 2. Spinkick gets 2. UT crotches him and they brawl outside. Taker hits the post, and they fight into the crowd. They fight towards the entranceway and Rob shoots him with a fire extinguisher. Trashcan to the head, and Rob dives off the balcony with a body press for 2. They head up to the entrance area, where Rob knocks him down for 2. Taker stomps him and ramrods him into the video wall, then tries the Last Ride onto the stage. Rob grabs onto the stage rafters to block. Taker finds a chair and Rob knocks it back in his face. Rolling thunder for 2. Van terminator on Taker as he sits against the titantron gets 2. Taker gets up and slaps RVD with the chair a couple of time. Rob tries a van daminator by the edge of the stage, but gets chokeslammed off there through some tables and assorted junk, he's dead. Taker climbs down and pins him at 10:53. 3 1/2 stars.

Match #6

Womens Championship Match

Trish Stratus Vs Jaquelyn

Typical sucky womens match. Trish gets the pin at 3:33 with a backslide. I guess I can give em a 1/2 star. Womens wrestling sucks so bad.

Match #7

WWF Championship Match

Stone Cold Steve Austin Vs Kurt Angle

Austin pounds away and stomps a mudhole, and Kurt bails. Back in, Angle takes him down and Austin retreats. Austin flips him off. Angle tries for the anklelock, but Austin escapes. Austin goes to the arm, and then chokes Angle. They slug it out and Angle gets tossed, Austin wraps it around the ringpost. Angle goes to the steps. Austin chops Kurt, but Angle rolls into an anklelock. Austin makes the ropes, dumps Angle, and they fight. Angle trips him and wraps his knee around the post, then does the ringpost figure four. Another anklelock, and this one takes longer for Austin to escape. Angle suplexes him and slugs away. Austin fights back, but gets german suplexed three times for a 2 count. Angle misses the moonsault as usual and Austin gets a thesz press and spinebuster for 2. Austin gives Kurt 5 german suplexes then Angle kicks him low to set up the angle slam. It gets 2 1/2. Kurt tries a stunner but it is countered into the stone cold stunner and Austin retains at 14:57. 3 1/2 stars.

Match #8

World Heavyweight Championship Match

The Rock Vs Chris Jericho

The big gold belt is now just called the world title. After some basic wrestling stuff, they fight outside and Rock goes to the steps. Jericho's arrogant suplex and pin gets 1. Rock fights back with a clothesline. Jericho suplexes him for 2. Clothesline gets 2. Rock comes back with a belly to belly and samoan drop for 2. Jericho misses the Lionsault and Rock fights back. Jericho cuts it off with a bulldog and Lionsault for 2. Snap suplex and Jericho goes up, but gets crotched. Jericho tries a flying bodypress, and Rock rolls through for 2. Jericho charges and hits the post. They brawl outside, where Jericho catapults him into the ringpost and tries a rock bottom on the table but Rock counters with a ddt on it. Back in, Rock readies to finish, but Rock bottom is blocked and countered to the breakdown. Jericho acts stupid and tries a peoples elbow but gets caught by Rock with the sharpshooter. He counters that into a sharpshooter. Rock almost passes out but gets the ropes. Walls of Jericho attempt is reversed to a small package for 2. Rock bottom!! But Rock is too wasted to cover. Vince runs in to start some **** and Rock coldcocks him. Spinebuster and elbow, but Rock makes biggest mistake of the night and goes after Vince and runs right into a rockbottom from Jericho and gets pinned at 19:03. I was enjoying it up until Vince stuck his mug in there. 3 1/2 stars.

Austin's music hits, and he goes right after Jericho. Angle whacks him with a chair then Rock bottoms Jericho and it's a double KO before things get started.

Match #9

Unification Match

WWF Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin Vs World Champion Chris Jericho

Jericho rolls over for 2. Corner clothesline, but Austin tackles him. Stunner is blocked, so Austin tosses him and they brawl around ringside. Austin dumps him on the railing and gives him the post. He pulls up the mat, but Jericho preps the Spanish table and tries the WOJ on the table. Austin powers out, and suplexes Jericho on the floor. They head back in, where Austin charges and hits the post. Jericho goes to the arm, but misses a dropkick and gets catapulted for 2. Jericho maneuvers out of the cover, into a Herb Kunze armbar, using the ropes for leverage. Jericho suplex and he goes up, but Austin nails him coming down. Austin comes back, but Jericho rolls into the walls, and the crowd kinda likes it. Austin makes the ropes. Ref goes down....cue unclean title win for Jericho. Jericho goes low and stuns Austin. Vince brings out Nick Patrick to count, but Ric Flair in turn pulls him out, and Vince in knocks Flair down. In the ring, Austin chases Vince and tries to kill him, then heads back in for a thesz press and WOJ. Jericho is tapping but no ref. Then Booker T comes flying out of the audience in street clothes (obviously), he grabs one of the belts, pops Austin and Jericho gets the pin at 13:35 to become the undisputed (in the wrestling storyline anyway) champion. Too much goofiness at the end for me, and in hindsight. Jericho only got to be the undisputed champ because they were bringing back HHH at the Rumble and setting up to feed Jericho to him AGAIN. Call it 3 stars.

Overall Opinion: PPV blows pretty much up to the Hardcore match and aside from the womens match, the rest is good stuff. Watch it for the hardcore match, and the undisputed tournament. The rest is nothing.

Final Score: This show gets an even 7.1 stars from me out of 10.0. Started out kinda weak, but it caught up at the end.
