a hidden treasure

i had the extreme fortune to be able to see this in a hungarian cinema class where the professor had brought his own dvd collection and played them on a region 0 player. i had no idea hungary made so many awesome films...i had known about istvan szabo, but not much beyond that. anyways, in the last two weeks, we saw valami amerika and kontroll, and while kontroll was the one that got international acclaim and release, valami was by far the better. i don't know what it was about it, but i found it both hilarious and endearing. i feel like it's the type of film that could be made in french canada about the same language divide... and is it just me or does the main guy resemble jack davenport, who plays steve on the bbc show 'coupling'? anyways, i'm thinking that this film is almost reason enough to get a region 0 dvd player and import it for myself from hungary. (or maybe visit there someday...)

anyways, you lucky hungarians, it seems you have a fantastic little industry with some genuine talent. i'm going to keep my eyes peeled for all the hungarian films that come my way.

Well I have a copy that i dont watch too often and i'd be willing to send it over if you feel like giving me something in exchange....and yes I agree, Hungarians do have a lot of good movies there is one coming out soon called "Szabadsag, szerelem" =freedom and love, it looks really good its about the 1956 revolution that happened, i just moved back to Hungary and fell in love with it all over again, you HAVE to come and visit sometime, do be sure to give me a ring when you do
...btw even if you get a cheap dvd player chances are it will play it...

as for the main guy and Jack Davenport...as in Tamas or Alex? Tamas, I can definately see the resemblence except that Jack is hotter...and Alex, well he will kinda look like him in 15 years...
As for good movies, I enjoyed Sunshine, which took part in Hungary, but Ralph Fiennes was in it...and oldie is Egri Csillagok (starts of Eger) which has a lot of potential and wisdom for something made such a long time ago, even the cinematography is at a high level for that. An other bitter sweet comedy like Valami Amerika is Csinibaba, a parody of the 60's communist Hungary. Im not sure if that has English subtitles but if it does, its worth seeing in my opinion....

I'd recommend 'Sound Eroticism', 'We never die' and 'Vuk'. The first one is a strange comedy (but I am not so sure about the translation, and with jokes it is quite important), the second one is comedy/drama (and the language is not that important here), while the third one is a classic animated film.
