Anyone like The Lost World

Tell me did you like The Lost World?

Charles

reply

nope.

Movies are my life...

reply

Yes.

My only real complaints are:

1. The whole "must preserve the Lost World by not telling anyone about it ending". Just don't tell anyone about it! It's lost, in the AMAZON! It's not like they'll be able to find it without the map or instructions!

2. The mistreatment of Roxton. Poor Roxton! No one can ever get him right! They clearly don't like the idea of a great white hunter who is such an enjoyable character, so they felt they had to darken him up. I've said it before, and I'll say it again; Political Correctness offends me.

3. The treatment of the ape-men. More PC! They obviously don't like the idea of the apemen being treated as villains, so they softened them up way to much. I mean, really. It's an adventure film! The ape-men are half-human cannibles! You're not supposed to treat them as nice, innocent creatures who are just doing what is natural! C'mon! This isn't a nature film, or gritty real life drama, you know. As well, the constant demands to save the apemen sound really stupid, and even more so when the apemen call the allosaurs and stab Roxton. The whole thing just makes the main characters look a little stupid in this regard, which is a shame since they had been presented so well previously.

4. A more minor quible, but I thought they took to long getting to the plateau. I think they should have just gotten there as soon as possible without most of the stuff in the jungle getting there. That way we could have had more dinosaur scenes

Otherwise, a very good adaptation of the book, and very enjoyable. I must say, this film does the best representation of the famous added romance that is in each adaptation. It's a very enjoyable addition, and that's one of the few things I really thought was missing from Doyale's book. (don't worry about his approval, he loved the 1925 version, which featured the first of these romances.) I also thought the actors all did a great job of embodying their characters, particuarly Bob Hoskins.

It was the best version of the Lost World they have made yet, you can read my review of it.

"2. The mistreatment of Roxton"

How did they mistreat Roxton? I thought he was portrayed as a fully rounded character, neither all bad or all good, who had a more old school attitude about a lot of things. In the end, as Edward points out, Roxton was right about the consequences of ignoring his point of view. He also behaved quite heroically at several points, especially the end, and he never lived down to Edward's skewed view of his morals. For example, Roxton never tried to take advantage of Agnes and behaved as a complete gentleman towards her. Frankly, I found her sudden epiphany about him one of the few false notes of the movie. I could understand her being upset with his actions towards the ape men, but it did't make sense she would suddenly comprehend his overall philosophy, which had been pretty clear from the start, and reject him for it.

I wasn't all that impressed with the production, but I did enjoy watching it. I have a soft spot for this sort of adventure; a la Burroughs, Haggard, Verne, Wells, etc.

I didn't care for the casting much. I've never been a fan of Hoskins, and the reporter and the missionary's daughter (?) mostly irritated me. I thought Roxton was good, though; the most enjoyable character for me.

Yep. I thought it was pretty good.

I liked the TV show. I don't get the ending.
Did the movie come out after the TV show or before?

Cheers

Did the movie come out after the TV show or before?

Neither; the TV series ran from 1999 to 2002 and the movie was released in 2001 (Christmas, I believe). It has no relation to the series besides also being an adaption of Doyle's book anyway.

Yeah, I enjoyed it. It is definitely one of the best when it comes to dinosaur movies. Goes right up there along Jurassic Park to me.

This version of The Lost World is a master-piece Adventure.

Roxton was a manly man...
I enjoyed all the characters, very true to the book

I've loved this film since I first saw it. It's still one of my all-time favorites.

I loved the TV show until it got to weird.

I believe what doesn't kill you simply makes you... Stranger.

I was surprised how much I liked this one (having been disappointed with other TV movie versions). Yes, the ape-men were treated too kindly. Shoot the dirty, stinkin' beasts! There aren't any ape-men in the audience to take offence.

As a lifelong fan of the original, I'd say this is the best adaption.
