A little perspective on the show.

Cuentame (originally Cuentame Como Paso, or Tell Me How it Happened), follows the Wonder Years format, with the entire series being a recollection of a little boy, Carlitos, whose adult voice provides insights and observations that only time can provide. The series very good and for many reasons. First, the cast is top notch. Every role is perfectly cast, and very true to life. The writing is good and always provides a good measure of angst for all the sweet moments. The writers certainly understand the use of the counter-point. Next, we have the political context of Spain framing the show. Much as in real life, the politics of the day, had a very real impact on ordinary peoples lives. A balanced show, with characters taking positions both for and against Franco, provides for a much better base for one to take a position. Finally, there are the references to childhood in Spain. Much like Wonder Years, if you grew up in spain, or even in another Spanish-speaking country, you will enjoy the many cultural references of the series.

It is a great show. It is just a pity that it is hard to find in the US.
