A good movie
Very underrated!!
Tim Roth and Rupert Everett are excellent.
Great production too, give a very authentic feel, esp considering it doesn't have the usual Hollywood budget.
Kudos to an intelligent and engrossing historical drama.

I disagree! This was an awful film and Tim Roth (much as I like him) was completely miscast. Admire him or loathe him Oliver Cromwell was a deeply religious man and a great leader of men. Despite suffering black depressions and violent mood swings he was by no means the bloodthirsty little thug portrayed by Mr Roth. I know Roth's height (or lack of) is something he can't do much about but it means he completely failed to capture the presence of Cromwell. 0/10 in my opinion!
If you want a good film about Cromwell, I recommend the Richard Harris/Alec Guinness version, which while not entirely accurate is far, far superior.

I really liked him in Rob Roy, but Oliver Cromwell he isn't.
This did not get good reviews and I agree. It's hard to watch Roth not be brilliant at something. IT's so choppy, so many short scenes, jeez, that's the most distracting thing about it. I couldn't finish it.
shareSPOILER ALERT!!!!!!
Luved the scene when Charles the 1st is looking out the window and the(commoner)guard comes up to him and tells him he must STEP AWAY FROM THE WINDOW!!!! and then CHUCK proceeds to SLAP THE BLOODY HELL OUT OF HIM!!!!!!!!

I liked this movie, too, and the performances.
However, I thought the beginning could have provided a bit more historical back story about why what was happening was happening.
I realize that this film's main objective was to focus on Cromwell's and Fairfax' relationship (how much of that was true or not, it did make for good viewing), but a bit more historical foundation at the beginning could have made this good film superior.
JMHO :)

SPOILER
I didn't like the ending. The idea that Fairfax and Cromwell would act like buddies on Cromwell's deathbed seemed absurd.
- By the end of Cromwell's life they were completely opposed to each other in terms of policy. Cromwell wanted his son to continue the dictatorship of the Commonwealth with its oppressive religious policies.
- Fairfax wanted a reestablishment of the monarchy and the return of Parliament which is what he helped to bring about after Cromwell's death.
The ending felt like something from some feel-good buddy film. It didn't fit in this movie.
BB ;-)
it's just in my opinion - imo -
