Detective

I have just begun watching Judge John Deed (1st 2 episodes, season 1). I am wondering why there is a detective assigned to Judge John Deed. It seems like he is the only one of his colleagues with a round the clock detective assigned, I assume, to protect him. Did I miss something already? If not, is this normal procedure for Justices of his rank in the UK?

If I recall in S.1 Ep.2 "Rough Justice" he is assigned a police protection officer and the camera in his Chambers - both of which serve future plot points - due to an upcoming major terrorism case

Within the Met Police, The Specialist Protection branch (SO1) is responsible for providing specialist protection for the current and former prime ministers, along with other government ministers. They also protect certain ambassadors, visiting dignitaries and other high-profile citizens who are deemed to be under possible assassination or terrorist threat.

Specialist Protection officers may be deployed at short notice, when information has been received that someone may be under threat. The command is also responsible for carrying out security assessments on civilian staff employed by those under protection, along with assessing security risks to the person protected.

Specialist Protection officers also offer personal protection advice to people who could benefit from being protected, but who are not deemed to be of such a need that protection from the command is necessary.

I was surprised that JJD had to live in 'digs,' like a dorm for judges. He had no privacy, all of his visitors were monitored. I've watched many English courtroom dramas, but this is the first show that introduced the concept to me. Why couldn't he live in his own private house and have a team of bodyguards standing by?
