This movie rocks!
I went looking for niche movies that centered around sailing. Got way more than I bargained for with this film! I expected something very Elm Steet judging from the cover design that makes it look far scarier than anything that's actually in the film. I watched this film aboard my own sailboat, and I have to say that definitely added something to the experience.
What made this film so compelling for me is how it attempted to stay very true to life, even when zipping off into the imaginal realms to take us on a wild ride (dead pirates in the bilge?). Dad's visit as he was making the transition from life to death was executed perfectly. There are still cultures on this Earth - including those indigenous to Australia - who believe it works just as shown in the film. If you've ever dreamed of or had a visionary experience of a departed relative or loved one and they've had communication for you as Georgine's father did in this film, then this scene probably rings true for you, too.
I found this to be an all around great story about a young woman who sails around the globe alone and faces her most nagging personal demons along the way. Poetic and mystical, unexpected and surprising, but probably not for those who shock or scare easily in response to certain psychological material.
Another slam dunk for Australian cinema - and a damn fine one, too.
