Funny thing on back of DVD

Just for your amusement. I looked at the back of this DVD and there was this quote that made me laugh. It goes something like this:

"Even fans of the Matrix will be left in utter awe and amazement." - San Fransico Times

OK. So...... what does an action movie have to do with a nature documentary!!?

reply

Welp, close as I can guess, Brento, SF Times meant this:

"Even technophiles and computer geeks usually out of touch with the realm of natural beauty and simplicity may find enjoyment in this production--a celebration of visual imagery so stunning in its presentation that even the younger generation who are beaten senseless by Hollywood's constant onslaught of intense manufactured pseudo-entertainment will delight in watching."

Don't think they was comparin' genres.
Deep analysis, I know...

I liked your extended version of the SF quote. C'mon, though, it was funny to read that on the box. They seem to think "hey, if we say 'matrix' on it, then everybody will buy it!" This is the funny thing about marketing: they are such dorks! I work at a video store and have too much time on my hands, and notice these kinds of things.

Various other examples I can just name off the top of my head is the Equilibrium DVD which says "Better than the Matrix" which was a HUGE mistake, since everyone had big expectations which were NOT met! *L*

Second, just as an aside, there was this Japanese DVD released and it quoted a source from the New York times saying something that made absolutely no sense whatsoever, like "Dog Bark Go Suck a Cake! - NY Times". Now that one was FUNNY.

I disagree. If it's a direct quote from the SF times, it's not marketing. See, they're just re-using a comparison somebody else already made. That's quite different from making the comparison yourself!

reply

You're right. Most of the people who watched "The Matrix" came away so impressed solely because of the visual effects in the film. The visuals were unlike those found in any prior film. I guess they wanted say that the natural beauty featured in this film outdoes the visual effects in "The Matrix."

reply

It sounds like a marketing ploy. You know...

"If you loved Cold Mountain, you'll love Kill Bill Vol. 2!"

reply

I think really they just mean that because this film is known for being visually stunning, it will impress those who have become entranced by computer graphics, such as the stylish fight scenes in the Matrix. They were just trying to give people who ARE familiar with the Matrix, but perhaps less familiar with natural beauty, a comparison to understand how PRETTY the film is, haha. best I can figure, neway.

reply

Hmmm, it looks like critics are taking each others material. On the back of my DVD its says "It is enough to leave even Matrix fans staring at the screen, gaping in awe!" --Jim Verniere, Boston Herald

Must be on the U.S. release, the UK release quotes the Daily Mail's review (groan!). But that quote from the San Francisco Times sounds like typical American consumerism... the average American clearly "isn't smart enough to think for themselves" based on how the American media treats its viewers, so needs to be encouraged to buy things with unrealistic comparisons and immature marketing tactics. I'm just surprised they didn't get Ronald McDonald to review it.
