I just don't understand...

Great actors and in places some pretty hilarious scenes, not a bad script... What went wrong? Why was it almost painful to watch at times?

I certainly didn't have any great expectations, but it didn't even live up to my non-existing ones.

I didnt think it was painful to watch, well not in a bad way. Really enjoyed this film, think it has too low a rating on this site.

I thought that as well. The story was very weak and unoriginal. The laughs were few and far between. The western motif hardly ever shone through. What was the point of the whole thing?

Another beef is that although set in Nottingham, none of the main characters came from the Midlands. The only character with a genuine Notts accent was the slapper in the Bingo hall.

That's a feckin' jazz haircut!

^ you could have said the same for 'Robin Hood and his Men in Tights' lol

I know what you mean.
the mom who sounded like she was from Albert sq in Walford!

This was just a complete 360 from what Shane Meadows is good at and he really ended getting it arse over tit. It wasn't funny in the slightest, Rhys Ifans is good for the odd cameo but is not cut out to lead, and the whole Western thing was laid on WAY too thick and became annoying after about 20 minutes.

i watched this film for the first time today and i enjoyed it. I like the characters. robert carlise is a good villain. kathy burke plays his kind hearted large foster sister with her on off cowboy wannabe husband played by ricky tomlinson. Rhys ifans is the lanky nice guy who gets tough at the end and you have some small tart in the middle of this story. its very easy to watch. i would lik to have seen more of the three scotish villains - they were funny* a good summer night film

i am half way through this film, its on channel 4. already i am getting all the regional stereotypes; ricky tomlinson the cheerful scouse trying to be the entertainer, rhys ifans the earnest taff trying to be seen to be right and thinking he can have a fight, carisyle the scots crim trying to go straight and kathy burke as no nonsense cockney. well, under an hour to go lets hope it dont just go by the numbers like i am dreading. commercials over so lets see.
