Clarissa is the child of Madeleine and Rickie: she was conceived the last time the two of them had sex (the night Rickie raped his wife). Ironically, Clarissa is the family's savior: she is bright and hopeful in a situation that is increasingly dark. Also ironically, she resembles Dinah, her aunt. That is why Madeleine wants Dinah to meet her at the end (and why the film pictures her flying the kite as Dinah had been flying one earlier).
Dinah sobs when she sees the picture of Rickie and Clarissa because of course she thinks of her own child with Rickie. In the book, Dinah's child is a son, but the film changes Dinah's child to a girl to make it more clear that Clarissa represents something of each sister united with something of Rickie.
