I suppose I should skip this one

I'd like to know from someone who's seen this movie whether it's worth watching (since I'll have to buy it since Blockbusters doesn't seem to carry it).

I really like Helena Bonham Carter. However, I don't particularly like movies where she or anyone else does something that I'd think was reprehensible if it was done to me or someone I cared for (although I did like "Wings of the Dove").

As I understand it, HBC plays a woman who has a lengthy affair with her brother-in-law. So she and the male lead are doing sort of double betrayals (like in "Damage"). I'd like to know if at the end of the movie, HBC says something to the effect of "Hey, this was really wrong of me. I'm sorry"?

anyway, I definitely think all Rosamund Lehmann's books are worth rooting out. They're all so knowing and melancholic. I loved this because it's impossible to blame anyone. Everyone's behaviour is reprehensible, and everyone is unhappy....

I recommend The Dusty Answer, if you fancy reading any more of them...

Let's just say this: Dinah (HBC) is wracked with regret and despair over the consequences of her affair. But in the thick of it, she is absolutely shameless.

I whole heartedly disagree with you. I feel there was a very deep and meaningful plot, and that Paul Bettany was more than just appealing. He was alluring to the very definition.

There is not one flaw in this film. The set, the acting, the music, the story...it all held my attention from start to finish.

Don't skip this one!

Most obviously your idea of acting strums somewhere between Fred Flinstone and Austin Powers. This movie was sublime, pure and intoxicating, the level of acting was absolute genius.

As for Mr. Bettanys' looks I'll take it that your a man deficient of any looks or appeal. If not, your a woman who knows herself all too well and therefore you know that you would be insufficient in too many ways to attract a man of similar qualities as Mr. Bettany. A healthy does of self confidence would stand you well in stead, and maybe make you less discriminatory of others.

If you had watched the film at at all without previous bias against Mr. Bettany and the cast of characters, you would have noted that it was a loveless marriage, mostly of convenience for his wife, and that she even stated that love was not what marriage was about, and that he had told her if she had loved him, she would have said it before, and then at that point it might have made a difference.

From your rantings about the "carryings on", I believe thou doest protest to much, and that the plot may have come to close to home for your comfort.

Oh, and have a good day !

WOW---you really DID hate this movie.
I doubt I can change your mind but I did want to point out a few things:

Rickie and Madeleine's marriage was loveless. She was emotionally and physically distant from him. No wonder the earthy, sexy, unconventional Dinah appealed to him.

As far as your comment about there being no guilt over the affair:

Rickie developed a life-threatening ulcer. I am not a dr. but have always heard that ulcers can be caused by extreme stress. I imagine Rickie was rather stressed-out over his guilt about his love affair with his wife's sister. Dinah gave birth to a still born. Again, not being a doctor, I cannot say for sure but most obstetricians tell a pregnant woman to do anything possible to reduce stress during pregnancy. I rather think Dinah was under alot of stress, don't you? After all, she truly loved Madeleine.
She just loved Rickie equally----what a position to be in. The death of her baby daughter affected her dramatically as evidenced by the final scene where Dinah & Madeleine are watching Clarissa flying her kite.

Re: your remark about Paul Bettany's looks. Most women value other qualities over looks-----kindness, humor, being a good father, being a good lover. I could go on and on.

Just my 2 cents. I loved this movie!!

I think Paul Bettany is rather cute and attractive in his own way :) But then again to each their own preferences.

I adore homely men...

I bought it on Ebay straight after seeing it on TV. Definitely one of the best movies I've ever seen. Real people, real mistakes, real pain. Helena Bonham Carter is magnificent.

"and Paul Bettany is so homely he should have a grocery bag or two over his head or else wait till midnight to go out of the house. He'd be lucky to get one woman interested in him, let alone two squabbling over him."

alright tenpercent, everyone's entitled to their own opinion so I'm not going bash anything. As I have yet to even see this movie, I won't say a word, but the quote above was just horrible. I for one think that Paul Bettany is a fabulous and talented actor with a great range. Yes, he may not be the average big hollywood paper cut out hunk that girls drool over, but he is talented in what he does. He's an actor not a model. And just for the record by some miracle he did manage to get one woman interested in him. Her name is Jennifer Connelly. And absolutely gorgeous, in my opinion.

"Do you want to come back to my flat for some coke and sex?"

reply

Clearly Jennifer Connelly didn't think he was homely...

reply

Just to clarify...Paul Bettany was absolutely gorgeous and intense in that movie. He acted so very well. In fact, the actresses were excellent too, so that makes one very passionate and beautiful and real movie, even though it's a sad one.

I just don't understand why someone would want to trash it or the actor?

reply

My 2 cents about the person who trashed Paul Bettany's looks. To each his/her own, I guess. While not very well expressed, this person is entitled to her opinion. (I'm guessing it's a her and PB is not her 'type.') I feel the same way about some other actors. They are cast as romantic leads that everyone is supposed to go orgasmic over and yet, because I find them unattractive, it takes me out of the story. I'm just not buying that people would do extreme things for someone so ugly/unappealing/noncharismatic.

That said, PB is not my type either (for some odd reason, I just want to jump through the screen and draw eyebrows on him! :)). I bought the movie as a whole because he is a good actor and I could understand the passion that he conveys. I get why some people think he's good looking and others don't. And yes, Jennifer Connelly appears to be mad about him enough to have a child with him. FWIW, their little boy is adorable.

I think everyone was in the wrong and yet everyone was in the right. It was all really morally ambiguous and that's what made it so appealing. I thought it was a wonderful film. I liked how it seemed to show that you could do horrible things and still be a wonderful person.

reply

This movie is amazing.

No one seems to know "Crack Treats in the Himalyas" and that's too bad.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

Hey, I liked it. But first you must understand that this is art mimicking life, right? Life isn't black and white, it's many shades of gray. No one does the right thing all the time. And some of us can even do some pretty terrible things even though we're 'good at heart'. Especially when it's the heart that is involved. Who watches movies that only project the ideal anyway??? Where's the fun in that? And what's left? Maybe some children's films would be acceptable, but probably not many. There's always villians. I like the messiness of movies like this!
