what the playback value of this film
is it any good?
shareIt's not very good, though I wouldn't say it's terrible. I guess if you have nothing to do on a Saturday evening and don't mind a dumb action film, it's alright.
Just be sure not to take anything seriously. Not the action, not the dialogue, not the time travel, and certainly not the historical accuracy.
lmao thank you for that grand description
shareGerard Butler is excellent, playing heroic archaeologist Marek. His performance alone, makes movie worth watching.
Also, one of the few Paul Walker movies, in which he's not racing cars, which is a plus.
Marek's character is very interesting, as is his love developing for Lady Clair. This role was Gerard Butler's breakthrough, prior to 300. Also, the Professor and Kate roles, are well acted. The movie is not all bad.
Of course, the book is far superior... they usually are. Read the book before you see movie, if at all possible.
Gerrry Butler is by far the best part of this film. Paul Walker is not very good in it and I cannot stand Kate.
shareAwful. Wouldn't watch it again.

I watched it a few times. It's not as good as the book but I still liked it fine.
shareNo. It's a crappy, pale shadow of the book, which was much better by comparison.
The truth is, this was yet another casualty of "gigantic-book-squeezed-into-a-2-hour-movie" syndrome. The book was just too big and complex to really make it as a 2-hour film. Unfortunately, back when this was made, nobody had thought to make a miniseries about it, and this was 7 years before the whole "turn books into tv shows idea" came about.
Basically, they dumbed down the science so bad, that even kids would think it sounded lame, the characters are almost nothing like the book versions, a lot of the good scenes were taken out, and too much focus was put on the battles going on in the 14th century parts of the story. That, and they used modern French, as opposed to the medieval characters speaking Lang d'Oc and Old English like in the book.
