Kate's Surfing

According to the FAQ, all the actors had surfer stuntpeople. It's possible Kate learned some basics to "study the role" or for fun.

Somewhere on the net there's a breakdown of the big heavy surf shots where she was doubled. Basically, any of the shots of her character in the barrel riding Pipeline are her double (famous woman pro, can't remember her name). Everything else is apparently her surfing. She did get pretty good.

After watching the Blu-Ray version I think Bosworth was doubled for some of the non-Pipeline surfing. Unfortunately, the higher resolution makes the close-ups where they pasted Kate's face on Rochelle Ballard very obvious.

In the surfing shots in the credits it looks like there's footage of all three actually surfing, as if they wanted to show that the girls could really surf. You can clearly see Sanoe Lake surfing.

(I watched the credit roll again. You can clearly see all three in one shot near the very end. Rodriguez knocks Bosworth off her board. There's also a lot of shots of someone who looks a lot like Rodriguez riding some pretty big waves, but I guess that's her stunt double.)

It says something about how dangerous Pipeline really is in that they doubled Lake even though she was a semi-professional surfer at the time.

What's the deal with the surfing in this movie? All they did was stood up and rode the straight wave all the way in. They didn't do any turns or anything. How was that in competition?
