What a dumb scene. Who in their right mind would pick one up, let alone hold on to it and go all the way down to the beach and make a stupid display of proper disposal of it and then risk getting fired? Not the best writing for this movie overall. Just because it's Hawaii, beaches, hot babes and surfing don't excuse it for everything else.

I think it was just a plot point as a reason for her to meet Matt and add some humor.

As for the confrontation, she didn't care about her job - she just wanted to be a professional surfer.
It's hollywood writing. It's why I quit and went for games instead of inane dumb-as-hell psychology writing, usually from people whose parents survived the second world war.
Movies are stupid. The good ones are the exception, but even then they're dumb.
It was SO dumb. and all 3 girls freaked out about the condom, when in my eyes the barf on the floor or the toilet was way grosser.
