Vinegar!
It's most probably blatantly obvious to everyone else but why did Mirta want the children to follow her into the kitchen so "she could put vinegar on them?!"

I think it was a home remedy for treating head lice. The girl mentioned elsewhere in the film that her brother had head lice, and later on, when you see the "treatment", it looks like one woman is rubbing stuff in the kids hair (and the uncle complains about the stuff burning his head when the mom is rubbing it in later).
