Why didnt he save her?

I just saw this and after going through the message boards I was unable to answer my biggest question regarding this film.

After Lilya talks Volodya off of the bridge, he tells her that he was really going to jump because he didn't want to live anymore. He says:

"You saved my life."
"Now I'm gonna save yours."

Those two lines were the most depressing part of the movie. I never got Volodya's statement out of my head. When he was an angel, in each bad scene I was waiting for him to keep his word but he never did. I know he tried to save her many times (telling her the Andrei is tricking her, begging her off the bridge, getting her out of her apartment, etc.) but the only conclusion I can come to is that she just didn't want to be saved. Would you say that he in some way did save her, but not her life? Any thoughts or analysis would be great.

Volodya its technically not an angel. In the movie he says that is what he thinks when people die, they go to heaven and became angels. And in that time she was thinking of him, how she just left him there all alone. He couldnt physically help her

In a way I think he did save her life by telling her that the door was left unlocked, she just used her eventual freedom to take her own life, despite him pleading with her not to, she had made up her mind at that point.

Even though Im no more than a monster - don't I, too, have the right to live? -Oh Dae-Su
