Is it Really Worse Than Endgame?

I'll probably end up watching it anyway.

this is worse than Highlander II.

for me the film is just depressing. as much as it tried to be 'cool' and 'dark' its just poorly executed.

Endgame at least gets props for effort in feeling like a Highlander story and having all the usual elements.

reply

Worse than Highlaner II? Yikes! I haven't seen that one in years but I remember it was painful to watch.

Donutpower is right, no matter HOW bad you think II is (and I'll admit I like it, shut up!), it is NOWHERE near as bad as THIS movie is. Hell, watching this will make you appreciate II more!

reply

this one makes HIghlander II look like art.
for me i find Highlander II watchable because its got Lambert and Connery.not the best acting but its fun to watch. Ironside was a good opponent, not in physicality but in presence.. the CG upgrade in the special edition makes the film seem nice visually.

The Source...well Adrian Paul isn't cool to watch in it. in fact he seems more of the whiny overprotective boyfriend than the heroic character from Endgame.
The Guardian is just ridiculous with everything he says.
the visual effects look poor. the majority of the film is all green screen and well its not up to par with feeling big and immersive.

if you watch the original version of The Source it at least starts off with a certain atmosphere. and i admit that i was so into the first 15 minutes of the movie. but after that it just fails in every instance.

if you watch the US release of The Source...well the intro looks cheap..and the narration at the end is just over kill.

it certainly makes one appreciate Highlander:Endgame haha. as flawed as that film is i can at least watch it over and over again. The Source i can maybe watch once every 3 years.

the one and only good thing from The Source is the score. the music to this film is great. its like the kind of music you'd hear for Lord of the Rings or a big fantasy epic. its like the composer did the music for this without even seeing a minute of film.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll sit down one of these days and watch The Source. Hell, I watched all the other movies & the series so I might as well watch this one.

watching this after the awesome series will make you feel depressed this was so bad i gained a bit more respect for endgame and actually rather like endgame now its a far better send of than this utter crap

you will have to forgive the lack of full stops lack of proper spelling im dyslexic but not stupid

reply

Yeah, it is. Personally I thought it was impossible to be worse than Highlander II, but this is worse, and not just by a little bit. It is really almost impossible to watch.

reply

I tried watching it and only made it about 15 minutes, or whatever time that stupid clown appears. Very painful to watch.

Yeah, don't bother with finishing watching the movie, watch Spoony's review instead... at least hopefully you'll have some laughs http://spoonyexperiment.com/2010/12/06/highlander-the-source-review/

reply

this made Endgame (which I thought was okay at the time) look brilliant

It was painful to see characters and a universe just so absolutely trashed and embarrassed. The antagonist of the film 'the guardian' is this terrible, goofy looking nancy who is all sped up, is supposed to be ancient but his weapons and hip hoppiness just say otherwise. He's really frustrating.

You feel like sending a sympathy card to Adrian Paul because you can just tell he hated every moment he was there but must have been contracted

reply

Still haven't watched it. I'm afraid :(

Trust me. Don't watch it.
It is so bad forcing someone to watch it violates the Geneva Convention.

reply

The others have spoken the truth, in fact, if you WANT to watch it, I have a MUCH better alternative for you. It'll give you the stroy while making you laugh at the same time, while only taking up 40 minutes of your life, instead of the hour and a half runtime of the movie itself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDGon3ppy2U

Thanks, I may check out that link.

Adrian Paul was talking it down when he was doing interviews about it. You know a film's bad when the star's doing that.

I know this is barely an old post but do you remember Highlander 3? It wasn't god awful but it was still crappy enough not to like. With the exception of Endgame, that is literally the best one of the sequels. Unlike Highlander 2, this didn't just not understand the series (which is ironic considering it was directed by the same guy who directed #1), The Source understands the series but its a film that feels like every single element that made the original, the series, The Search For Vengeance and even Endgame great.

"If you don't like your ideas, stop having them!"

reply

Endgame while perhaps not good per se, is the only one of the sequels that doesn't make me want to gauge my eyes out while watching it. (It had a decent idea for a story. Didn't fly completely off the rails like 2, and wasn't a dull rehash/poor-man's version of the original like 3) This film however, even in a series with a film as notoriously bad as Highlander 2: The Quickening is actually somehow the worst one.

reply

This movie is so bad that i would erase it from time if i had a DeLorean capable of time travel.

Then again i would probably travel back even further and stop them from making any movies apart from the first one. Oh and i would re-write the last episodes of the series two, that devil inside MacLeod bit was terrible. I felt like putting a screwdriver in my brain was a good idea watching that.

reply

This is pretty much how I feel completely.

The first movie is a classic, love it.

The second was a joke. Its worth one watch just to laugh at it.
Connery was pretty funny in it, and even though the plot was silly, its passable enough to make it watchable, even if half the time you are sat there shaking your head at how lame and hilarious the plot is.

3 was a waste of time. A shameless re hash/copy of the original. It had one or two original ideas with the sorcery and whatnot, but Van Peebles tried to copy Clancy Browns performance as the Kurgan and it came off bad. Plus the whole idea of "Oh these immortals were buried, so he didn't actually win the prize" was pretty stupid.

End game however, whilst not being a very good movie in of itself, is by far the least inept of the sequels. The plot isn't too bad, the dialogue half decent, a few pretty decent fights (Mac vs Jin Ke), some decent flashbacks and it was pretty emotional at the end watching Connor give up his head to save his cousin. There were so many ways it could have been improved, the whole middle of the film, everything between Duncan and Connors graveyard meeting with Kell, and Connor and Duncans rooftop meeting, everything that happened between those two scenes was a waste of time, and the Kate/Faith Character was terrible, and the actress baaaaaad. Jacob Kell was a decent bad guy, if a little over acted at times by Bruce Payne (Bruce Payne has a repuatation for that, see Passenger 57).
But overall, the least bad of the Highlander sequels, it just needed more Connor in the middle of the movie, and less Duncan fretting over Kate/Faith, which was dull.

Which leaves the Source......Well...what can be said.
Where as Highlander 2 was laughably bad, and worth a watch for comedic value, The Source is painfully bad....almost insulting. Everything being almost post apocalyptic for some unexplained reason, Duncan stalking roof tops at the beginning like Batman to save the woman in distress, and the Guardian, christ on a bike....the hell were they thinking, a guy half dressed in S&M gear with his body painted white, making wise cracks (HELLO JOE!) like he has been watching too much MTV. Plot holes every where, having Methos shoe horned in to appease fanboys, the lame Queen covers in the soundtrack and just the overall plot were *beep* terrible. Definitely beats Highlander 2 as worst Highlander sequel. At least Highlander 2 had a few funny moments and a hot Virginia Madsen. The Source is pain incarnate and the script writer and everyone else involved should be executed for crimes against Humanity.

reply

Oh my yes, this movie is even bad for a sci-fi special.

The true failure of this movie comes from (what I call) the "unforgivable sin" of any film. The plot is f---ed up! You just have NO idea what the heck is happening...ever!

At least with Endgame, you can see a plot forming, even though the script was awful.

In "The Source", all you'll keep saying is "What the h*ll just happened?"

For further examples, I turn to my favorite "good" bad movies. My favorite example is Bubble Boy. Sure the script is juvenile, but it's funny and the plot is clearly laid out. You might moan at some of the lame jokes, but at least you'll always know what's going on.
