I really don't think the presence of a mentally challenged character determines a movie's success. I can think of many movies with mentally challenged characters that were very well received in the United States. You have Forrest Gump, Rain Man, What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Sling Blade, just to name a few. Playing a character with a mental illness or handicap is beneficial if an actor is trying to win an Oscar.
