Who did they kill?

Total body count appeared to be three: Psychologist, Alex, and then some other unknown person seen in the b&w flashbacks. Alex even spat on this person...and I could tell that that was the favor that Joseph mentions when he tries to get the gun from Alex for the other jobs. So that mystery person came first. According to the timeline it couldnt have been the girlfriend so then who? Thats the only thing I didnt get about it. Loved the film!

I'm not sure either. I'm going to watch the commentary in the next few days, so maybe it will shed some light.

I should do that to. I should have done it the other day in fact when I watched it again (third time in a week)

I'm hoping it answers that question. As well as one or two others. It's kind of like when I watched Donnie Darko. I just need a few questions answered.

And thanks for having your movie list in your sig. All this time I've been here, I never realized they had a layout option. I've had mine in sets of ten all this time.

I know this an old thread, but did anyone get an answer to who they killed?

I just watched it with the commentary, and they (director Kirschenbaum, lead Askew and co-star Nash) stay pretty tight-lipped about it, as well as other elements. At one point, though, the director says (about the flashback killing) that they never openly discussed it, and it's best left up to the audience's interpretation.

I got the feeling that the flashback killing was some accident involving Joe & Alex a long time before the events in the movie. In the opening scene, Alex asks Joe if he told Liz about "it", and he admits yes. Note how the mystery killing flashbacks are always in b&w while all the other flash-forwards are in color. I'd say b&w scenes represent things that occurred before the movie timeline.

From the b&w flashbacks it looks like Alex was on the ground, possibly getting beat up by someone, and Joe saved him by shooting the attacker. After Joe fires, we see Alex get up, mouth bleeding, and spit on the body. My guess is it was a random brawl that got out of hand. But it establishes the bond that Joe & Alex have, the way Alex "owes him one" and seems to be Joe's protector throughout the film.
