Right, he could essentially do anything he wanted. Unless he got picked up by the cops and fingerprinted - being in the system as "Johnny What" - he'd be fine. Theoretically he could go back to being Denis if he wanted to - unlike what a previous poster said I don't believe it's against the law in Britain and its colonies to fake your own death (they never say what country Denis lives in or serves time in, although the film was shot in Ireland, according to the end credits). Besides, there's nothing saying he faked his own death - oops my plane crashed and I was living on a tiny island until now. I mean, there was no mention of Denis having life insurance, or of him (or anybody else) profiting from his "death".
My thoughts were that the beginning and the very end were to show that he was rich enough to belong to the "leisure class" - that is, through whatever means, he had enough money that he & his family didn't have to work. So as long as he avoids getting fingerprinted by the police, he could be Denis, or he could just "live off the grid". Like, the house was obviously registered in the sister-in-law's name, so if they needed anything that required a name - credit cards, the "license" you need to have in the UK if you want to watch TV, electricity, whatever - just register it in the SIL's name, or even in his daughter's name.
