Even try to fly the plane? It isn't like he had anything to lose.

or an even better question i guess is why didn't he just jump into the water just before the plane crashed, and swim to safety?

Or an even better question - why was he so scared about crashing into the sea when 2 seconds before he didn't seem the slightest bit bothered about being shot in the face?

Because a PERSON was holding the gun, and he wanted to be a "tough guy" to everybody up until the very end. After Denis left the plane, it was just him and his stained underwear to sweat out the situation.
