Were Max Stuart's words scripted?

Does anyone know if the words the real Max Stuart speaks at the very end of the film, when he neither affirms or denies his innocence, ("Some people say I did it, some say I didn't, some say Elvis Presley is alive" etc.) were his own words, or were they part of the script?

Good question. I hope someone has the answer.

why didn't he protest his innocence

I think he was just tryin to show that he couldn't really prove his innocence, and it's up to you to believe whether or not he did it. At this point, it's a little late to do anything about it either way. He already served time after claiming innocence, so at this point it really wouldn't matter at all. He's not goin back to jail for it anytime soon, so there's really no point to beat a dead horse. At least that's my opinion, I dunno...

I thought the point was that he had moved on.

Where did he move to?

A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep.

I'd be surprised if they weren't his own words and I think the point of saying "some people say Elvis Presley is alive" is to illustrate that people can be sheep and will believe anything under the right conditions i.e. in racist Australia will believe he did it when he didn't but that its too late for him to prove anything.
