Ok, I'm slow...I need some help - SPOILER

Absolutely loved this movie...much more than I could have expected. Funny quotes throughout - "nature gets in my crannies"

Some questions though...so why did Noel (Zooey Deschanel) express such disinterest in having sex with Paul?

Also, for the first few scenes of the movie, why was Paul's hand (albeit the wrong hand) taped up as if he had already punched the car glass?

What was the symbolism for Noel cutting her hair while away?

reply

I can't speak to the taped hand, but as for the "disinterest in having sex with Paul"--I didn't see her as being uninterested. In fact, it seems it was Paul who wanted to keep things pretty slow. He repeatedly says he doesn't want it to be like with the other girls. He even says right after the hot tub scene that he doesn't want to sleep with her, and she asks in reply, half-jokingly, if he's attracted to her. I think that since she was a virgin and falling in love, she didn't feel the need to push it too fast toward sex, but neither do I think she wasn't interested. And when they finally do sleep together, it wasn't like it could've been, was supposed to be, when they were shy and she was the innocent one and he was everything and all she knew. It had become too complicated. I doubt he enjoyed it all that much either--we just couldn't see his face.

And as for the hair, I don't think it's some huge symbol, just a physical representation of how she'd changed, how he'd lost her. It made her look grown up, showed that she wasn't quite the girl she was when she left. He says, at the end of their fight upon her return, that he wants her to put her hair back--or something like that. Just shows that things are changed and can't be made what they were.

She cut her hair the same weekend that she made the mistake. It's likely that she had already made that mistake prior to her calling him, given the way she was behaving on the phone.

Girls tend to do drastic things when they feel really guilty about something.

she told him the soty about the boat and how she multilated herself, i think it's the same thing. she screwed up, she did something drastic.

reply

Except it was all about feeling pain when she cut herself on the boat. She wouldn't have felt pain when she cut her hair. And maybe it was just me, but I didn't think she'd slept with the guy yet when she called Paul, and her hair was already cut.

PLEASE, don't make it a freudian thing.

Have you ever had your heart broken?
Man, that's PAIN. You feel cheated AND stupidly guilty, powerless, abandoned, sad and very angry.
Your ego has been backstabbed, the best part of yourself (caring, loving, willing to improve). Love implies self-love, so when you're cheated like that, you lose everything.

Consider yourself lucky if the inevitable depression lasts two years only.

So OF COURSE you curse women, you despise them, you become suspicious towards them, and, above all, terribly scared of any emotional involvement.

She wasn't the reluctant one, it was Paul because he wanted to get it right this time. Ironically of course he had happen to him the same thing that he did to all of his old girlfriends.
