Predict the IMDB rating of "The Leisure Class"

I'm guessing 4.1.

We see Jason doing 50 takes of every scene to get it perfect, and checking over every detail making sure it's exactly the way he envisioned it, like he's Tarantino or Fincher or Scorcese. But every time they show something from the movie actually being filmed, it looks terrible. This movie just seems like it's going to be awful. It almost makes you wonder why he's putting so much care into something so crappy.

After it airs he'll claim that HBO put too many time and budget constraints on him to make the movie good, but that's BS. It just seems like a pretty lousy movie no matter how much money you threw at it.

reply

no lower, since I'm cynical enough to think HBO can influence it if it falls below that.

maybe as high as 6.5, but that's tops.

Shame, because the actors look and sound great together -- good chemistry. I just think the whole execution has to be perfect to effectively satirize the old-money premise with witty repartee, and I don't see perfect happening. It's a different era in audience tastes from when Dudley Moore's Arthur pulled it off.

I just went back and looked at what other Project Greenlight movies are rated, and they're all in the 6.1 - 6.5 range, so I'm probably low with my initial 4.1 prediction. You're right, HBO might have some "influence" on the rating, or hell, maybe I'm wrong and the movie isn't as bad as it looks. Now I'm thinking maybe somewhere in the 5 range.

reply

An overrated 5.5...

reply

the trailer of the movie looks awful.

reply

When I saw the thread, I thought 4, but since you picked 4.1, I'll go 4.6.

reply

Glad to read this post. Been thinking the whole time that this movie looks embarrassingly bad, and remain stunned that HBO agreed to go with it.

The premise seems like it belongs to a Saved By the Bell episode than a proper film. It could not look less funny to me honestly.

I'll guess 5.3 for it's imdb rating, but a 1 from me?

Comedy is HARD. And the shooting script for this movie is clearly terrible. And the director is entirely focused on time-management, and seeming competent to his employers. So of course it will be terrible.

In this age of modern technology, a would-be director like Jason is far better off working with a team of people he knows, and being left to do things 100% his own way. Unfortunately, shooting with film is the worst idea in the world for this kind of approach, since it is the astonishing power and cheapness of digital that revolutionises low budget film-making.

Comedy is rarely about 'cinematography' in the classic sense, so this is one genre where the loss of film is of no consequence. Jason is too thick to get this, since he spends too much time boosting himself with his pseudo-knowledge of 'film'.

What Jason is proving is that he is a competent enough jobbing director to get basic employment in this field. But he shows far too little commitment to the genre of comedy to become a significant name. I'm sure his future will be as yet another unknown TV director of light and insignificant drama.

I agree, and that's why I think it's so funny watching him agonize over every detail and nuance for, what looks like, a pretty crappy comedy. It's like watching David Fincher direct "Hot Tub Time Machine". Except Jason is no Fincher. And, unfortunately, "The Leisure Class" probably isn't as good as "Hot Tub Time Machine".

It doesn't look funny at all. Is this still supposed to be a comedy?

reply

It's currently at a 4.4. That might be about right.
