Questions from an American viewer

I noticed a lot of his guests tend to make digs about his weight and Ross just brushes it off like it's no big deal. Does any of it actually bother him? I, for one, thinks he looks just fine and not out of the ordinary for someone his age group.

Why are his guests much more high-profile than Graham Norton's?

I think Jonathan is quite used to the idea of being a little larger than he used to be (although I agree with you; he looks fine) and he talks about sitting at home, watching box sets of top American television shows and eating donuts as if he enjoys it, so I think it's something he sees as a small price to pay for a very rich lifestyle. ^_^

As for why his guests are more high-profile than Graham Norton's, that's a little tricky (for me) to explain. First of all, unless I'm much mistaken, Jonathan's show has been around longer. Another reason is that, a few years ago, Michael Parkinson was the top chat show host in the UK but, since his retirement, Jonathan has always been the next best thing. He was always someone who provided a humorous slant to chat shows whereas Parky's was more serious but he was still a recognisable chat show figure. The final reason why I think Jonathan's guests are more high-profile that Graham's is because Jonathan himself is more high-profile. As well as being a film reviewer, Jonathan has hosted the BAFTAs for the last few years, so will be very recognisable to actors and actresses.

Sorry if that's a little long-winded but I like trying to be helpful.

I always thought Ross got better guests because they thought Graham was too camp or over the top, but this really cleared things up--thanks.

... and more importantly, Jonathan Ross gets higher viewing figures that Graham Norton.

I think comments about Ross's weight/ hair/ dress sense / etc are just banter. He just takes them in the jokey manner they were intended. He's pretty forthcoming with the jokey "insults" himself to his guests (or at least, the ones he knows will take it as a joke) so he could hardly take offence!
