Were those not the worst Irish accents?

I thought Brosnan and Marguiles were simply awful with those fake accents, dear god. They bordered on laugh out loud goofy. It's unbelievable.

Heh, I haven't seen this movie yet, but I can't help but laugh at some of the comments I'm seeing, especially the top "review" on the main page that it's obvious Brosnan isn't Irish. Hate to break it to everyone, but he actually IS Irish! lol Ok, to be fair, his accent is a little watered because he moved from Ireland to England in his youth, but I've heard him do a traditional Irish accent flawlessly before. No clue what's up with this movie in that regard. Maybe the director wanted a certain dialiect or something and told them to do it that way? Dunno. I could see something like that happening, though. Imagine a director wanting someone from Sussex to do a Cockney accent? That'd be hilarious.

I forgot about that, but still an awful accent.

Even though Ireland is a small country of about 4 million people accents are actually very diverse, so there really is no such thing as an Irish accent.

When I was at school, children came from more that a 20 mile radius to attend my secondary school. As a result accents in the school actually differed quite a bit. So, even as an Irish person I would have a hard time judging if an accent in a movie is good or bad, because I know there are so many variations.

Yes, that is true. When I was in Ireland, I did hear different accents from the Irish. I landed in Shanon, where there was a definite heavy accent that I would have considered "the standard" before I went to Ireland, but after landing in Shanon, and driving to my destination, I found that the "accent" in the area I stayed in, was more what could be termed "Midwest America," with a slight inflection that sounds "traditionally" Irish; if that makes any sense. I was a bit disappointed, as I was looking forward to that "traditional" heavy Irish accent, lol.

This is true, and why it is so annoying when actors use what I call "Hollywood Generic Irish" in films. However, Pierce was attempting Working-Class North-Side Dublin (there are at least 4 accents in Dublin City alone, probably more), but he made a complete and utter bags of it. This is all the more amazing when he actually IS Irish.

Movie makers don't care about accents, and that's what I hate most being a language person. Well, at least in England the movie makers do pay some respect to accents and at least try to immitate them. You should be grateful that your cinema industry isn't like in Lithuania, where no one cares about accents, and you have 5 different dialects of Lithuanian in one village...

I saw Evelyn for the first time last night and I went away thinking that most of the accents (and Brosnan's in particular) were really pretty good.

As I sat watching this film with some friends over from Ireland (Cathal, John Paul and Seamus) I was pleased to see they laughed through this film as though it were a comedy and not a drama. Brosnan is the only Irish actor incapable of doing any kind of Irish accent. The last time I was in Limerick to see the lads at University, they took me to see "Gangs of New York." There is now a general consensus that only Leonardo Dicaprio's accent in that film could possibly be worse... ( We wont mention that John Wayne film...)
They said that Marguiles was actually quite good.

Anyway, I was pleased to see Father Jack as a normal man... he looked so cute, and not at all deranged! FECK, DRINK, GIRLS!!!

Well if it makes your pals feel any better, as someone from Georgia I can tell you that I have yet to hear a single faked southern accent out of hollywood that sounded anything remotely like real.

Fake accents in general are pretty horrible. Every once in a blue moon someone can pull it off, but it's not common.

This is why a lot of viewers and critics thought highly of Peter Jackson in Heavenly Creatures. There was some very subtle work with the accents there. Someone took it apart and analyzed it, it's still on the fan website, including the way that one person's accent can change depending on who they are talking to and what they are talking about (how serious they are).

I'm all right, I'm alllll right!

The accents were pretty laughable...watching on RTE now for the first time since it was released...

Pierce's 'dawter'?! Seriously none of the children spoke like that...'daddy, daddy'....should it not be 'da, da'?

If it was supposed to be a working class Dub accent it would have fitted better...

...just an opinion from a working class Dub :)

Bronson, is a NATIVE of Ireland, County Meath. What an IDIOTIC post!

What, just for once in your life can't you be serious?

I know you are, but what am I?

LOL, I SAID your post was IDIOTIC! I, on the other hand, like Bronson, am Irish. Born in Bray, County Wicklow.

And your post was EXTREMELY stupid. Bronson is a native of Ireland, and his accent was FINE.
