If the movie was set in 1800's it would make sense

Why would you come from a fist world country like Ireland to live as illegals in US.....

reply

Plenty of people struggle to make ends meet in lots of first world countries. I have lots of friends and family who moved to the states even during the Irish boom times because they wanted a change or they thought their opportunities would be better served in a much bigger richer country.

There's a moral to this story Del Boy but for the life of me I can't find it!

You sure know nothing about the world you live in, pal.

What wasn't said in the movie, but was said in the DVD documentary "The Making of In America" was the father was offered a part in a t.v. series in the U.S., but when they got there it fell through so they had to do something else.

I agree, though, it made no sense why they would come to America and live in poverty. It's too bad the movie left that important part out because it makes no sense as to how and why they ended up in America to begin with.
