Who did he choose :S?

I think Sara.

He tells her on the phone that he will call her right back because he has to do something first, and that is to wash his old self away. This is why he dives under water. And by going under water I think it symbolizes himself becoming someone different, more care free, hence why I think he will end up choosing Sara.

I think it's Sara partly because the movie is called Laruen Canyon and he first had a run in with her on that road Laurel Canyon when he almost crashed going to work that first day. It just made sense to me that he chose Sara.

Sara, for two reasons. Firstly, because I'd like to think that he isn't a self-destructive masochist who'll actually give his lying, cheating, horrible girlfriend a second chance, and secondly, because the submersion scene seems to indicate an epiphany taking place in his head, where he's - hopefully - realising that he doesn't have to stick to his original plans, he can change his mind and take a different path and it won't be the end of the world.




Seriously, with his MOTHER...????! Who DOES that? There's no excuse.

Could it be that Sam chooses both Alex and Sara. After the penthouse incident, he appears to be reconciling with Alex and his Mom. Maybe Sam is learning to give his own values a rest, and realizing that he can have it all.

I've watched this movie a million times and always thought he chose Alex, actually it never even crossed my mind that he may have chosen Sara, but I just watched it again and while on the phone to Sara, she mentions that you can't help who you fall for. As soon as Sara says that, Ian, floating on a lilo being pulled by a boat, crosses the screen and his mum looks at him as in to say "what can I say, I love him!", I think this symbolises that you CAN'T choose who you fall for, Ian wasn't typically the most appropriate person for Jane to love, but she did. I think in that moment, Sam realises that even though it may be tough, due to being engaged to Alex, he had to break it off. He couldn't help that he had fallen for Sara.

She was beautiful, exciting, and had common interest.

Plus, how could he ever get past Alex getting involved with his own mom! Yuck.

Niether. He chose to drown himself at that moment.

Way late on this, but I think he chooses Sara.

I think that the reconciliation scene makes it pretty clear that he and Alex won’t be together much longer—not once does he say that he wants her (as Alex says that she wants him), but only that he’s trying to “keep this together” and “make things right.”

Sam grew up surrounded by “losers”—libertines whose lives appeared to be messed up because of their flippant go-with-the-flow, listen-to-your-heart attitude. It’s pretty clear that most of his adolescence and adult life was spent trying to take and maintain complete control over his life to prevent him from ending up like his mother and her groupies. Watching his mother go through multiple partners throughout his childhood probably also made him wary of keeping his romantic and sexual options open, (hence why he stayed with Alex for so long and wanted to “keep this together,” even though it was pretty clear to everyone around them that things were fizzling out,) as this appears to have had a particularly negative affect on his childhood.

Sara is beautiful, fun, relatable, smart, successful, and most importantly, appears so effortlessly in control of her life, living in LA without falling prey to the libertine lifestyle that consumes Alex. When she wonders why she would “let herself” fall in love with him, Sam takes the implication that she has any control over who she falls in love with too seriously, and feels guilty over the fact that he can’t help falling for Sara.

I think that when Sara calls and tells him that she can’t control her heart, Sam finally comes to the realization that nobody can—regardless of whether you’re a “loser” like Jane and her groupies or a successful physician like Sara. Further, and I think more importantly, it shows Sam that you can be controlled by your heart while still remaining smart, professional, and successful (etc.)—that there can be some middle ground between how Jane lives and how he was attempting to live—which finally gives Sam permission to dump Alex for Sara, and open himself up to new experiences and let loose a little bit without the fear becoming a “loser."
