hahahahahaha! this had the funniest most incredible use of special effects i've ever seen. anyone reading this who has seen the short 'making of' on the dvd, the director talks about combining CGI (or a sorry excuse for CGI), the lifesize train model (with that weird glowing green screen) and the hornby toys you mentioned, and in his words it looks "pretty good". HAHAHA! van damme later admitted being embarassed by this film.

directors delusional if he thinks the special effects are good. He should never be allowed to make another movie.

reply

No kidding. And what was with the crappy music video like shots?

Seriously, someone gave this to me on DVD and I thought I was watching a film from the 80s. Never would've guessed it was from THIS century.

reply

Haha brilliant thread!! Everything you guys have said is sooo true.

The extras on the DVD sound too bad to be true that I might just buy it to see the director make a total tw@t of himself even more. Fun stuff!

I have just wasted an hour and a half of my life watching this film, it makes Thunderbirds look realistic. As usual Van Damme has been punched about 600 times, shot 3 times and thrown off the train, yet he has a slight graze to his forehead. Someone mentioned Hornby train sets........Early learning centre's more like it, the 'special' effects on the speeding train make excruciating viewing. If it was made in 1962, fair enough, but it's only 3 yrs old, and with a budget of about ninepence by the looks of it.

Yes man, that was the most terrible scene in a movie i ever have seen.
I like van Damme, is is a hero from my childhood but that movie is one of the worst i ever have seen, an di thought black eagle was bad.

lucky that his movies got better with in hell and wake of death but the hard corps was bad again.

but all his movies are far better then seagals. only derailed is sp bad that it hurts.

cheers

Never mind the clunky train set SFX, what about the papier-mache scenery??!!

reply

The 'rope' ladder from the helicopter onto the train is classic too! This film could not possibly be any worse (no mean feat), therefore is 10/10 in my book!

reply

Not a good film, but the worst was definitely the editing.

reply

Hornby trains are positively realistic compared to the models used in this movie . . . and I see what you mean about the papier-mache scenery.

The autoracks exploding was funny - but what about the CGI RAILROAD TYCOON PLAYSTATION 1 SFX when the freight train hit the InterCity on the crosssover - AND THE IC STILL CARRIED ON - surely the whole rake of carriages would have been derailed as well!!

reply

The train models themselves were pretty good it was the backdrop and mountain and lighting that did it in. If the lighting was darker it would have been more convincing or even better done outdoors. the trains look to be G guage. if they had done the bridge crash scene outdoors like the cassandra crossing it would have looked real instad of using a CG background.

Damn you all. It just started on TV so I'd thought I'd jump on here and see some opinions. From has been said, about it being so BAD (0/10 stuff) that I just HAVE to watch it now to see for myself!!!

-B!LL!

reply

Recorded it on television thinking I was going to be watching Clive Owen's "Derailed".

Instead it turns out to be a Bulgarian JCVD movie with worse special effects than you would see in an average episode of Thomas the Tank Engine! Every thing the above posters write is true. This film is just risible. Don't get me started on the atrocious dubbing and the completely inappropriate soundtrack. I'm laughing too much thinking back about it.

reply

Haha yeah the editing freakin' sucked too! Elena looked pretty good though!

reply

The editing was crazy in this. It's like every action sequence was chopped into tiny fragments then spliced back together in a random order and set to disco music. Not to mention the freeze-frames, the odd use of dissolves and cheesy 70s style zooms, and the completely pointless split screen effect that the director decided to try at one point.

This film only had two things going for it. Laura Harring's right breast, and Laura Harring's left breast. The practical effects they employed to contain them in that night gown probably cost more than the entirety of the train SFX work.

I'd rank this as Van Damme's worst. His cameo films like UFO and Dragon Eyes don't count. Derailed is just an awful AWFUL film. It makes Desert Heat and Knock Off look like a masterpiece in comparison. Hell, Laura has more action sequences than Van Damme. WTF?!
