1) He wasn't out to be an actor and was up front about that.
2) It's alot easier to play yourself than to play someone else. He was fantastic in 8 Mile. No argument on that. But he was playing himself.
and he did it better than anyone else playing themselves. When you're told to be yourself you probably don't know where to start, it doesn't matter it was scripted and filmed over and over, the act stayed there.

I must say Stallone as Rocky was great, but not exactly himself. Though if you read interviews and such, it's very close.

Eminem was offered lead role in "Elysium", but he wanted the film to be shot in Detroit(good guy Em). That was not an option for the two studios, so Neill Blomkamp(director of Elysium) moved on to Matt Damon as his next choice.
