Eminem did a really good job as an actor in a legit movie. However, to say he's a great actor is kind of iffy since he was playing a version of himself. Not taking anything away from him because he wasn't wooden or stiff in his acting like some actors (Hayden Christiansen comes to mind). To say he's the best rapper turned actor is a stretch after only 1 movie? I'd go with the majority of people and say Will Smith and Ice Cube would act circles around Em anyday... Ludacris was good in Crash and Hustle and Flow also. Not to mention Ice-T who was great in New Jack City and is good in CSI. AND can't forget the man himself Mr. Shakur, who wasn't even in his prime when he was cut down. Look at Juice, Poetic Justice, and Gridlock'd talk to me about Em after that.

I'm a huge Eminem fan too, just can't see him outacting any of the people on this list.

i'm sorry, but Ice Cube is a horrible actor. Of course Will Smith is a very good actor, but he wasn't a good rapper. I think Eminem comes off pretty natural in the movie, but you're right, he is just playing himself. I've heard some of the hardest roles involve playing yourself, but I don't know if I really buy that. Ludacris does a decent job in his roles, but a lot of rappers have the problem of putting too much of an ego into their characters. I saw that a lot in Ludacris when he started switching to acting, but he might be better in his later roles. Eminem doesn't really put that into his character in the movie, which I like. I think a big reason Eminem isn't in other movies is because people aren't sure if he can pull off any character other than himself.

Ice Cube isn't a horrible actor, he has range... look at him in Boyz N The Hood, then Barbershop, and then The Longshots, not the mention the Friday trio. Ice Cube may not always make great movies (Are We Done Yet), but he's definitely not a horrible actor. He's not going to win an Oscar tomorrow or anything, but calling him a horrible actor? Even if you hate Ice Cube you can't call him a horrible actor. Will Smith was a very successful rapper, which is why he got his acting gig, look at his early work before the Fresh Prince. The rap game changed a lot after Will Smith started acting so naturally when he tries to rap with not cursing or not being hard and just making family music, people are going to compare him to what's hot now not necessarily judging his talent.

Have you ever seen Boyz in the Hood?

ya he is a pretty bad actor

reply

better than 50 Cent thats for sure

reply

He did a good job in 8 Mile but he was just playing himself. I don't think he has the versatility to play a different kind of character but even if he's 1 dimensional he's still solid in that 1 dimension.

reply

LMAO! SOOO TRUE! Eminem was WAYYYY better than 50 cent. I really hope 50 thinks clearly before he decided to make another film again cuz that movie was just bad...I'm just glad I didn't pay money to see that Get Rich Dying crap. 8-Mile is decent though.

Em has stated in several interviews, the reason he doesn't do more movies is because It's not his world.
"His world is rapping, not acting."
I think he expands more on it in his interview with 60 minutes

The best rapper turned actor is DEFINITELY Andre Benjamin (or Andre 3000)

reply

The best rapper turned actor is not Andre Benjamin, it is Mark Wahlberg.

reply

Every Mark Wahlberg movie is ipso facto a B-Movie.

[deleted]

Yeah, Em's a good actor, and i'd say he's the best rapper turned actor ever.

reply

eminems just a great all around performer. him, ice cube and ice t are probably the best rapper-actors.

reply

just judging by this movie he was good but then again he was playing himself it wasn't like he really had to ACT like someone else but like I said he did good

reply

will smith (even though his rap wasn't hardcore) is a much better actor than any other rapper-turned-actor????

eminem is a chump

reply

*beep* YOU EMINEM IS THE *beep*

[deleted]

Will Smith and Ludacris would have to be the best, off the top of my head.

reply

You obviously have very poor taste if you think any rapper-turned-"actor" is a good actor. Will Smith? Ludacris? Eminem? Whoever, really. Sure, they may be able to fill certain roles better than non-rappers, but that does not make them good actors.

Good actors are Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, Ed Norton, Leo DiCaprio, and Robert Deniro before he flushed his career down the tubes in favor of romantic comedies and similar catastrophes. No rapper-turned-actor can hold a candle to any one of them. It insults good taste to even suggest it.

"clinikill" He wasn't playing himself the movie was based on the section where he grew up but it's not based on his life. It has a few resemblances but it's a fictional movie. To the original poster he is an O.K. actor but we didn't really get to see if he can play a funny guy or something so to me he is a very good "serious" actor but you can't put him into the category of good actor because a good actor can do any kind of movie and we have only seen him in one movie. Overall he did do a good job in 8 Mile. I enjoyed the movie very much.

I Ain't Mad At Cha!!!!! But I will be if you don't shut the *beep* up!!!

In my opinion Eminem did quite well considering that this was first movie. Yea he did play himself but he pulled it off pretty well. But I doubt that he'll ever establish himself as a recognized professional...even if he quits being a rapper and totally shifts towards acting. His fame as rapper won't allow him to be taken seriously...he'll always be stereotyped and remembered as the 'white' rapper. And it's also too early to say that eminem is a good actor. Anyhow, from what I've seen in 8 Mile, I would love to watch him some other serious role.....something besides a rapper.

reply

hes a great actor and he will be great in 'have a gun will travel' in 2008

reply

I agree with you completely! People can say what they want about him as a rapper, (I think he is one of the few great rappers left today) and anyone can say "well, he was just playing himself anyone can do that" but its not that easy. Its not like anyone can act well just because they are playing a character BASED on themselves. I highly doubt Eminem has ever taken an acting class, and considering this was his first movie I thought he hit the role spot on. Also, he got some help from Kim Basinger and Makai Pfeiffer both of whom I thought did a great job. What I ask people who have seen this movie to do is to just think if Eminem were not famous at all and simply a seldom known actor in his first movie and this story was completely fictional not based on anyone. Would you say he did a good job acting? If you say no, then you probably wouldn't know a good performance if it hit u in the mouth. He has yet to prove himself in his next movie coming out in '08, but 8Mile was a good movie, in large part because of Eminem's acting abilities.

reply

@dryslimjim....

I thought he did good in this movie, but your analogy is useless. If he's an unknown person, in his first movie role, he wouldn't be playing a role based on himself. Which this movie was. Yes he was very good in 8 Mile, but the fact is, his character was largely based on him. From his family life, where he grew up, etc. Bout the only thing they fictionalized was the names of the characters in the movie.

reply

@danimal.........what's your point? If someone offered u a role in a film, and you had to play yourself, in a studio that looked exactly like ur house growing up, w other actors that are playing your 'mom', 'friends', 'GF' etc. Would that be easier than playing a COMPLETELY fictional character w a completely fictional story line that had nothing to do w ur real life? I highly doubt it.... Just b/c someone has gone through some *beep* (eminem) in their life, doesn't mean it's easy to re-enact that *beep* w a camera and a sound crew around u....IMHO it would be harder to play yourself (believably) in a film based on your own life, than it would be to play the Hatter in Alice In Wonderland.

he's quite natural, i like his performance!

Beware of akagi_2 , he floods the board with trash!

reply

Yeah he did damn good if you ask me, I hope he makes some more movies in the future. It would be interesting to see how he gets on with a role he isn't familar with. (Since 8mile was kind of how his life was before he hit the big time).

reply

Are you guys kidding? He's a total crap actor, as evidenced by his performance in this movie.
