The Vacation Scene...

Did Dennis Quaid's character have sex with the guy in the spedo that followed him up to his room? I know they live together later in the movie, but did anything happen while they were on vacation?

Is it odd that I find Gary Oldman sexy?

They show the boy entering Quaid's hotel room and begin to remove his clothing and it is implied that they have sex, but nothing is shown.

The boy doesn't enter the room, he is standing in the doorway, and he doesn't remove his clothing, he just puts his hand inside his slightly open robe and slowly moves it down.

I certainly would have had sex if it were me in that scene! And, yes, I do think the characters did as the camera pans back leaving them in the room together.

And, I thought it was cute seeing them in the hotel room, the boy relaxing and obviously happy. Funny, the age difference never came up (i.e. I think the boy's father seemed like he would be pretty intolerant and homophobic to me and thus he'd try and challenge the 'dirty old man' that was taking his son away). BUT, I guess that would be a scene for another movie or this one would be far too long.

It's implied that they had sex because Cathy later asks him what took him so long to get back to the pool, and he makes up an excuse about his stomach bothering him. I found it slightly disturbing that they showed the boy moving his hand down, about to touch himself. That bothers me because it reinforces the negative stereotype of gays crusing in that manner. I have certainly never made contact with anyone in that way, which is just plain crude. But in the craft of filmmaking, I think a few seconds of extended eye contact through the open door would have gotten the point across in a more sensitive manner. We already know the boy followed him to the room, after they have both watched each other at the pool.

While gays cruising may be a negative stereotype, that's the way it usually worked back then. There was no internet in those days, and there weren't many gay bars (and even if you lived in an area where there were gay bars, you could be arrested just for going there, and if someone saw you go in they would know your secret - so many chose not to go.) If gay men wanted sex - and what man doesn't? - cruising was often the only way to make it happen.

Of course, that doesn't mean that there weren't times when two men would find each other, and then get to know each other and being a romantic relationship. But Dennis Quaid's character wasn't actively looking for a romantic relationship at that point - his long-term goal was still to "turn" himself straight. His willpower was running low, and he found that guy attractive, and he wanted a hot quickie. While he ended up falling for the guy and deciding to stay with him longterm, that wasn't what he expected when he went up to the room with him.

Of course they had sex. What do you think they went off to the room together for, to "talk"? Heck no, men only do that with women because the women make them do all that before they let them get them in the sack. These are gay men.
