Hated the father not the film.

Then again, I guess I wouldn't like the film as much if I didn't hate him so much. Such a coward.

How so? Because he didn't come out when homosexuality WAS ILLEGAL? I mean, yes, he did some awful things. But if I recall, his wife encouraged him to use reparative therapy, and even though I don't consider this a "bad" act for those times, it really caused the main problem because it convinced him even more so that what he was doing was "unnatural." I can understand not liking him, or even pointing out his numerous flaws, but hatred? The real villain here is society which caused the racism/sexism/homophobia of the 1950s and still pervades in our world today. (although mostly it's just homophobia nowadays)

Well, Frank's character was pretty reprehensible for various reasons. I understand that he couldn't come out but his racial bigotry did annoy me. You'd think he'd have more sympathy.

But, I think they did a good job of showing how stressed and unhappy he was in his circumstances. And, his bad behaviour/attitudes did give more sympathy to Cathy's character.
