Even worse than Atonement!

This is the second time this month where I have wasted nearly 2 hours of my life on an utterly woeful movie.

Literally nothing happened in this movie. It was boring, bland and quite frankly a waste of time, effort and money.

This is the second worst movie I have ever watched. Only slightly better than that piece of rubbish Atonement.

Agree. I did like how they captured the time era but everything else was a total bore. I watched this back in January on Film4 and it was certainly something I found myself getting bored with from the start. Managed to stick around to the credits but it never picked up at any point. I believe they showed it tonight too. Not that I bothered even watching it this time.

I'm a man and I liked this movie. I thought it was told very well and shot perfectly to fit the time. It's a remake of a 50's film and Todd Haynes very much tried to stick to the old studio way of shooting.

There's no other way they could have possibly ended it, not since it took place in the 50's.

And I loved Atonement. The cinematography and score were amazing. The story was very intricate and unique as well, in my opinion of course.

im a guy too, and this is one of my favorite movies ever...

the acting is terrific (i like nicole, but she should give julianne her oscar...), the screenplay is brilliant, and all of the technical aspects are flawless- the sets, costumes, especially the score. the cinematography is amazing on its own, and thats puting aside the fact that it brilliantly captures the essence of a 1950's melodrama. even the colors and lighting are interesting enough to hold ones attention if they think the story is boring.

its not for everyone i guess....if you like action and humor, then this isnt the right film for you to watch. but dont say its bad just because you didnt like it. you must not understand what quality movies truly are, which is also evident from your extreme dislike of atonement, which includes some of the best cinematography and music i have ever seen/heard in a film.

OP,
Not enough car crashes for you? Need more gore or snickering sexual innuendoes? Maybe you should stick with the "Harold and Kumar" series, or perhaps "My Bloody Valentine", and avoid thought-provoking, crafted films like this one.

there is a certain difference between genre movies and auteur cinema. To enjoy this movie you must be a woman or a gay or a cinefile. If you're not - try something else. Todd Haynes one of the best american directors nowadays and a truly unique talent. But New Queer Cinema isn't for everyone.

reply

Have you ever heard the word "pasticcio" in postmodernism? Because this movie looks like a parody and the three pricnipals are robots

Why is this film regarded as "queer cinema", anyway? This isn't an attack, it's a genuine question, as the film struck me as being about much more than homosexuality. I found the same description swirling around Mysterious Skin - a brilliant and profound film restricted to just one of its elements. It's like describing American Beauty as "queer cinema" simply because it contains gay characters. It only paints a detail of the complete picture.

Nah, it's just not that good. Poor man's Douglas Sirk centering on some simple social themes.

And boy did they overdo it with the dutch tilting.

you probably shouldn't make such sweeping statements because you suck way worse than this movie.

Sorry, I don't mean to judge or anything. I'm just saying, I'd much rather watch this movie than listen to you babble for two straight hours any day. Hell, I'd pay twice the cost of a movie ticket to dodge the noxious poison that you regurgitate from deep within your rancid bowels. Don't get me wrong, this movies melodramatic quality passes the point of unsettling to downright unbelievability. You would probably agree with me on that, if you were only able to muster the hint of a brain fart, if only you could stop drooling over the gym socks of the 30 year old MILFS in spandex who are married to men richer, smarter, and whittier than you when you crank your yank, Mr. Senior Health Club Manager.

Nice to see such reasonable and intelligent discussions on this board

Very clever presentation. Black or white. great or horrible. Babble or brilliant. Your opinions are poetic. Unfortunately, the price paid is ---- they're rubbish. Worse yet they smack of the work of a simpleton.

Man, I wrote that comment like six years ago. I think I was just super angry and was lashing out at people, haha. You're right, I sounded like a total jerk.

Also, hey! We joined IMDb in the same month! Cool.

Atonement (2007) is a beautiful masterpiece I am sorry you can't see the beauty of real Art-House Cinema. Far From Heaven is a very good movie It is so tragic and yet touching.

reply

I preferred this film to Atonement. The use of color was incredible.

reply

Funny how both are Focus releases.

I really liked Atonement (I think Focus' awards consideration should been more "focused" on Lust, Caution personally) and thought Far From Heaven was a real achievment.

It definitely also helps if you're a cinephile that loves those kinds of movies (I'm not a hardcore "woman's weapie" fan, but I do appreciate them for their subtle beauty).

We will be cruel to the Germans, and through our cruelty, they will know who we are.

reply

Amen! Maybe if this movie had been released in the 60's. Bored me to tears, but what do I know? I am just a man (for all you women).

I won't defend the OP, I watch this movie cos I am indeed a movie lover and Julianne Moore fan so I liked it, but if I'm neither of both I would find the movie pretty bland too. Atonement was a pretty good movie too.

The original poster shows what's wrong with audiences today. He says nothing happened in this movie. Ok here's what nothing means: 1. a husband realizes he's gay, 2. the wife realizes her husband is gay, 3. wife falls in love with black man, 4. both husabnd and wife undergo profound changes to their lives and outlooks, 5. wife gets disappointed when love for black man is unrequited, etc. etc. Yes, nothing happens in this movie. Much much much more happened in Transformer: Dark of the Fallen or whatever it was called.

reply

Probably, what a previous poster said is correct: the OP needed (at least at the time when he started this thread; he might have matured during the last twelve years) explosions and blood and nearly pornographic sex scenes, or he couldn't pay attention to what happened in a movie. How sad...

Excuse me what movies that resemble older eras do you like?
