"You Should See Her Without Her Face!"

What was that meanness about? He was obviously drunk and had been unhappy with his life, but for a successful sales exec at his own highly regarded annual party that seemed way out of place and did not connect. Neither did the host sitting on the sofa smoking and getting drunk while the hostess buzzed about. I get the 1950s gender roles, but that party was made out to be just as much of a show and tell for him, she was the supporting wife role, not the lead player, that was supposed to be him and he was acting like a really bad guest, the kind the hostess would feel justified in asking to leave and the other guests would feel relieved if he did

He was not a successful sales exec, he was a deeply unhappy, repressed homosexual man. He gets drunk and hurls awful comments at his wife who he doesn't love and probably deeply despises despite of her best intentions. Given this volatile mix of deep insecurity, unhappiness and confusion, his comments at the "party" are perfectly in line with his character.

I saw that too. He was desperately unhappy and took it out on his wife who wouldn't go against him and I think that also made him madder. It made my blood boil when he attacked her so because of gutter snipe rumours and the "why would you do that to me, think of me, think of my position" I wonder if he wasn't talking to himself.

It's made clear in the movie that he excelled in his profession. One can be a "deeply unhappy, repressed homosexual man" and still be successful at his job 

You're misinterpreting my comment so you can feel offended. My point was that the character was not about being a succesful sales exec. That was not what the character was about at all. The character might have been a succesful sales exec, he did not feel very succesful, did he?
