The concluding montage...

The movie was great. I was wondering if someone could give me a
definitive answer concerning the apparently moving footage of Nietzsche
at the film's conclusion. I was astonished to see it, but later on read
that it was an illusion created with still pictures. What is the story
behind this, and what is the source of the information?
