Please recommend similar films

I would like to see more evocative films like this about teenage escapism, with a similar abstract style, preferrably also made in Asia. I love the way this film was shot and editted. Please make some recommendations to me. Thanks.

Nobody Knows is similar, I guess.

It is also Japanese.

Not really about teenagers(then again the girl was pretty young) but very much about escapism: Shiki-jitsu.
it stars Shunji Iwai as one of the main characters.

Did you ever notice that people who believe in creationism look realy un-evolved? - Bill Hicks

BLUE SPRING / AOI HARU (Shugo Oshinari plays a small role)
HARMFUL INSECT / GAICHU (Yu Aoi is in this film)
NOBODY KNOWS / DAREMO SHIRANAI
SAMARIA

reply

AOI HARU and SAMARIA! Brilliant. I agree.

Mathilda, don't you ever do that again or I'll break your head, you got that?

reply

blue spring i didn't care for, but the other three, and especially harmful insect i'd second. also shiota's earlier film moonlight whispers that someone mentioned below, although that one got under my skin a bit too much for me to comfortable with it

reply

Blegh!!
Visitor Q is repulsive...
... I highly recommend it.

Oooh, I might have to stick some of these on my list..

also be on the lookout for the controversal Japanese film THE WHISPERING OF THE GODS starring Hirofumi Arai. Bleak as all hell.

There is no other one like it, i wouldn't even call any movie close to "similar" to this. I have seen a lot of movies from all reaches of the universe, and none of them is like Lily, Lily is very unique. Although, of course the other Shunji Iwai's movies have similar shooting techniques etc. But they aren't similar movies.

As stated above, it's not very similar to Lily, but I would recommend everyone to watch Takeshi Kitano's Kids Return. The best japanese movie about youth - right after Lily of course.

Both of those are good.
However, when I saw this I was very much reminded of Moonlight Whispers or Gekko no Sayasaki. That deals with japanese teenagers and the really disturbing sadistic/masochistic (yet charmingly sweet at times) female/male relationship between the main characters.

Takashi Miike's Young Thugs Nostalgia and Innocent Blood movies are a brilliant display of Japanese youth. Also if you're turned off by seeing the name Miike, don't worry, this film even surprised me with it's sense of realism. It's very different from the usual Miike in a realistic sense.

Also Kwak Kyung-Taek Friend is an excellent portrayal of South Korean youth.

Also, not exactly the same and not Asian, but Thirteen usually comes to mind when talking about youth corruption.
