Gerard Butler

I bought this series purely to see the work of the wonderful Gerry Butler.
I found the series surprisingly good, but it needed better continuity and a more expilcit ending.

However Mr. Butler did not disappoint. He was outstanding as the alcoholic Johnnie, trying to reform and get his life back together.
As usual Gerry gave a truly believable and moving performance, I wanted to hug him when he got beaten up.

One to add to the collection for Gerry fans, I think.

The whole series was really good. The other jurors' stories really grabbed me (especially the guy with the awful in-laws, and the guy who invested unwisely years ago and lost his house), but it was impossible to not be totally hooked on Johnny's story. Gerard Butler's performance portrayed pathetic desperation, but without losing the character's dignity. Poor Johnny—I just wanted to pat him on the back and tell him that it was going to be okay! I'm really pleased with how his story ended. :)

Like many others here, I discovered "The Jury" because of Gerard Butler. (I think he's fantastic, but to be honest it was my mom that urged me to get these DVDs, so she could see him too!) So far I haven't seen him give a bad performance. I sure look forward to seeing what sorts of roles he does in the future.

The DVD set for "The Jury" has just been re-released, with new cover art. The old DVD package had pictures which focused on several characters equally, but the new cover art seems to show Gerard Butler's face more predominantly. Gee, I wonder why that is? (I think they want to cash in on his growing popularity!)

I spent more than I should have on this DVD because I wanted to see Gerry in this production, and I wasn't disappointed. In fact, I bought it for Gerry, but ending up enjoying it for it's own merits. Outstanding ensemble cast and riveting storylines - but Gerry's as a recovering alcoholic was the best. Since I have read that Gerry struggled with alcoholism himself almost 10 years ago, it made me wonder how "true to life" his portrayal was.
Wish he would play more modern, realistic characters.

How much screen time does Mr. Butler have?

You know how they say you always hurt the ones you love?
Well, it works both ways..

He has a lot of screentime. I'd say he was one of the most important characters. However, they focus on about 6 or 7 characters in total, so it isn't like he dominates or is the obvious "star." All I know is that most people will remember his storyline most vividly (and I'm not just talking about Gerard Butler fans), because it is so touching and poignant. He plays such a great character.

The other storylines are interesting too. Truly, it's an excellent series. Really sucks you in.

Yes I know now, too. Just saw it yesterday...
He and the whole series is really amazing...

A friend of mine recently sent this to me in the mail. I watched it and I really enjoyed it. Gerry does an outstanding job in this....as usual. I was impressed, but then again...he always impresses me.

reply

Well, yes, he does have a shirtless scene.

I hope you enjoyed it! :)

Is there only one box set for this series? Like, is there only one season?

reply

Yes, it was a six part mini-series, I bought it in a two disc set and it's well worth buying - Gerry is amazing in it but apart from that it's a good story which will keep you gripped and, for once, it seems to have a happy ending!! Helen McCrory's performance is spot on as is that of her controlling husband played by Mark Strong and Derek Jacobi and Anthony Sher are spot on as the QCs battling it out in the Courtroom at the Old Bailey.

I'm so glad I found this thread!... I'm a new Gerry fan, but am really eager to see more of his work. I heard this was good, and it sounds like it's got enough Gerry scenes to really make it worth the purchase!

Watch for the interplay between Gerry and Mr Cording (Derek Jacobi) the barrister. Gerry would probably know that barristers learn to read body language and quickly know who is for and who is against Gerry trained as a lawyer and is therfore more astute than most. The eye contact the way the barrister directs his statements. Very Old Bailey. Beautifully acted Gerry Butler is always on top form but here he is more thanat his best. His life experiences he uses so well and enhances the whole series. Thank you Gerry and good luck with your new film P.S.I love you. The trailers look superb. Perhaps an Oscar. Joan

He did take his shirt off but watching him drink himself into a stupor wasn't too sexy. He was pretty damn cute the rest of the time, like a little puppy dog. A little puppy dog you want to take home and sleep with! LOL

I just wanted to play nursemaid to gerry's character and ram that baseball bat up len's arse when he beat gerry up. especially when the old guy found johnny on the floor after he blacked out after he began to drink again when rose told him she was married and len was her husband. The movie was a 10 on my grading scale. A-Class acting from everyone especially gerry.
