Postmodernism at its worst

Upon viewing episodes of this show, I knew immediately that this is postmodernism at its worst. No logic, no order, no sense whatsoever. Modernist humor by sharp contrast is grounded in logic and the use of reason. Postmodernism is antireason, and appeals to the Gen X and Gen Y cynical worldview that nothing is absolutely true and all is meaningless. Nothing is better than anything else, and all truth is self-made and relativistic.

LOL-- I don't know whether to laugh at you for trying to inject a term like "post modernism" into a cartoon about a meatball, French fries, a milkshake and their low life neighbor, or to ridicule you for your moronic attempt to quantify a mindless cartoon on Adult Swim with a hackneyed definition you picked up during a lecture from your freshman humanities course in college.

It's a funny show that's meant to be humorous and random. A cartoon about talking fast food has absolutely nothing to do with anyone’s world view and you should beat yourself with a bag of oranges for even suggesting something so stupid. Furthermore, as a proud Gen X member I don't believe in that nonsense about nobody is better than anybody else. Only someone who has no clue what they are talking about would make that assumption. That brand of thinking is a humanist/ liberal POV-- not a Gen X POV.

In summation, if you're thinking about ATHF that much, you probably shouldn't be watching the show.

Hope this helps.

reply

Too many ASSumptions, make you. As a part of a film group that meets regularly, ATHF is a regular lead-in. ATHF has been called by others an example of postmodern humor. As a Gen Xer (b. 1967), I hardly think it "stupid" that it was a moronic attempt to quantify a mindless cartoon. You are right about it being mindless.
I'm so glad you don't believe that "nobody is better than anybody else."

With multiple graduate degrees, I do know what I'm talking about, and I'm quite sure the people who put this tripe on Adult Swim have humanist/liberal POV.
Thanks for your ad hominem attacks. You give conservatives a great name.

It's absurdest humor with no objective meaning. This mentality does transfer into very high quality art, but with aqua teen its just funny.

reply

WOW you have a law degree? Astounding!

What possible value or relevance does your legal education have to with this discussion?

An unemployed hobo with a 2nd grade education has about as much expertise as you do with respect to analyzing cartoons.

And you say that you meet with a film group also!?!? OMG... Hold the presses. Is this one of those tea and crumpet type get togethers where effeminate men and unattractive women sit around and make meaningless observations about things they pretend to understand while reassuring one another that their opinion matters because they have "post graduate" degrees? Do you guys meet at the local Starbucks as well?

Only a pompous buffoon would reveal such self serving tripe about themselves to add credence to an opinion that was ill conceived to begin with.

Also, when did I ever say that I was a conservative?

reply

lrc-7: "ATHF has been called by others an example of postmodern humor."

Oh, I get what the fuss was all about now.

lrc simply read this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aqua_Teen_Hunger_Force

And decided to belabor a weak point in it:

"The series has been cited as an example of postmodern humor"

A single, throwaway sentence description cited from non-academic sources - a very fragmented, postmodern source of information if I must say so myself.

After your next degree you'll be able to post with "postmodern" and "deconstruct"!
No PC university liberal would ever create a show that mocks retarded meatballs. They do produce propoganda for greenpeace or the AGW industry.

Ah, somebody who thinks they are smart because they have degrees.

Reminds me of the Mensa meeting where I got to listen to a bunch of people whining about why they aren't rich. Their plan was: be smart ?????? PROFIT!

reply

I'm sure the wounded-inner child losers who created ATHF are truly smart role models who have a lot to contribute to world peace. All they know is the end of a bong.

They also know how to make a successful, long running TV show enjoyed by millions and a modestly profitable movie ($5.5 Million in domestic gross, $13.5 Million in DVD sales against production costs of $750K). So far you have garnered no fans and scathing reviews. and you have time to engage in a lengthy attempt to validate yourself on a posting board so we may conclude that you are not the busiest lawyer at your firm.

Oh, and making people laugh IS contributing to world peace.

reply

So has Justin Bieber. Worthless postmodern anti-logical non-sequential crap is highly profitable. Popularity validates everything. This is why there are worthless celebrities like the Kardashians, and worthless animation like ATHF.

Except they don't smoke weed.... infact 1 of them doesn't even drink he is VERY straight, being the voice of shake, so once again your degree leaves you waving your arms in the wind like an idiot looking for attention based on pointless assumptions.

Because a talking shake with meaningless dialogue is such brilliant art. Gen Xers and Millennials will never have the brilliance of Boomers in the writing and creativity department.

The dialogue is not meaningless, it is full of deliberate non-sequiturs and paradoxical inferences, if you pay attention. The lines that do logically follow also have some very witty references and inferences. Whether you find those things funny is subjective, and has nothing to do with your generation.
There are also certain references to Monty Python I've noticed, which follows, as they are clearly aiming for the same style of humour.

All your dull, snide remarks amount to nothing more than the petty cynicism of an adolescent mentality, of one who assumes they speak from a solid baseline of knowledge only through laziness, naivety, and ignorance. I see this often in adolescents and in certain lazy and boring older people, who have much in common. If you can't appreciate this show and therefor assume there is nothing to appreciate, it's your loss.

In a memorable scene from an under-appreciated movie, "Evil Roy Slade", this bit of dialogue:

Evil Roy (pointing to a wall of certificates in his psychiatrists office): "What are these?"
Psychiatrist: "Those are my diplomas."
Evil Roy:" What do they mean?"
Psychiatrist: "They mean I'm smart."

Roy rips one of the diplomas from its frame, folds it and stuffs it in his pocket.

Evil Roy: "Now I'm smart."

If you can't dazzle them with your (self-declared) brilliance, baffle them with your (self-evident) BS. I'm surprised you didn't list THAT among your degrees.

Yeah i think we know exactly the type of person you are, nothing worse than a hipster with an ego brought on by "multiple graduate degrees" way too funny.

Very well put! That guy is in love with his own "voice" on that one.

What?

No logic, no order, no sense whatsoever.

Yes? And your point is? This is late night stoner comedy. This was never meant to have any of that. It's meant for a cheap, quick, empty laugh. It's the "fast food" of late night TV, really. I don't see why you'd try and attribute the label of postmodernism or any kind of deep meaning to a show like this. And if you can't just take your brain out and enjoy this, then there's no reason to whine about the show you don't like.

Don't get eliminated!

reply

"So what?" is my point exactly. The degeneration of art, which is always in the eye of the beholder, and that again, is postmodernism. "So what?" is what postmodernism is in a nutshell, or said in another way, "whatever."

lrc-7: "Modernist humor by sharp contrast is grounded in logic and the use of reason. "

If that is the case, what do you make of modernist movements like Dada movement and Surrealism, which are anti-reason and anti-logic? Or what about James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake, which is grounded in its own made-up language and dream logic, which is recognized as a staple in modernist literature?

And writers like Pynchon and David Foster Wallace and are postmodernists, but their novels are hardly antireason by any stretch of the imagination.

I suggest you read more about the terms you use before you make generalizations like that, dude.

reply

I can't figure out who is more of a douche bag tool, lrc for his pretentious holier-than-thou attitude about what art is and is not, Or the pretentious hipster-than-thou teenagers who think everything is art. I think this gos to show that no matter what age group you're in if you have an x and y chromosome you're most likely a douche bag.

reply

HAHAHA-- Guit nailed it right on the head. Tough call!

reply

But lrc doesn't even know what the words postmodernism and modernism mean. Surely he is subject to more ridicule for saying things he doesnt know much about with such snobbery and conviction.

The OP forgets that Mastershake is a strong upholder of "values". Which you find at the strip-mall, where values are king.

reply

I don't need to defend the fact what those words mean. I'm sure you seem to know what the proper definitions are. Do not lecture me as what I don't know or do know.
And yes, I love being an elite snob with conviction. ATHF is a brain dead excuse for entertainment that is worse than Family Guy.

Reading this thread, I feel like lrc-7 hates himself for liking the show and is trying to convince himself why he shouldn't like it.

I'd be willing to bet he'd get a good laugh at:

"Who left the door open?... and tore it of the hinges and threw it in the yard?"

reply

Oscar Wilde used non-sequiturial humour frequently in his work. And he knew a thing or two about sucking penis, let me tell you.

That acting was so bad, I think you gave me cancer.
