Best Flops

What do you think are the best(which i mean good movies) flops?

Mine in no order are
1. I Spy
2. Life
3. Donnie Darko
4. Death to Smoochy
5. The Replacements

reply

Well, if they were flops, most people won't acknowledge them as good movies. These are my guilty pleasures, movies I enjoyed and couldn't believe were some of the world's most hated movies until I looked at the ratings on this site.

1. The Avengers
2. I-Spy
3. Wild, Wild West
4. Flubber
5. The Master of Disguise

yeah, Flubber rules. As does Jumanji.
others on my list - The Time Machine (Guy Pearce) and both Underworlds.
Oh, and weekend at bernie's 2. And Police Academy 9. And K-9. And Red Heat

reply

Not to criticize your choices, but I'd be curious to know if you're familiar with the original Avengers, I Spy and Wild Wild West TV series at all. I've found that people unfamiliar with the shows seem to be more accepting of the remakes than those who go in with expectations. Certainly as a big fan of the three original shows, I found the movie versions all but unwatchable (although one can never get tired of Uma Thurman in leather).

Flops

1. BattleField Earth
2. Star Wars I, II, & III

Shawshank redemption.

Did pretty poorly when released in box office!

UP THE TOWN!

reply

I'm looking on imdb at the statistics for Shawshank and you're poorly mistaken. It did awesome.

reply

Where are these stats? Not saying you are a lieing, genuine question. Tone sometimes hard to put accross in text.

UP THE TOWN!

reply

Aaron, everyone knows SHAWSHANK was a box office disaster. It made it's mark on DVD. Even the re-releases failed and the distibutor blamed the name.

reply

Funny. I never knew that. I saw it in theatres. Got good reviews. The title is just a truncated version of Stephen King's original title. Good thing they didn't use that!

2 other beloved films, which bombed in their initial releases, were 'The Princess Bride' & 'The Wizard of Oz'.

borchers34 how can you say Star wars movies flopped especially part III

reply

They flopped because they were horendously awful. Episode I sucked. Episode II was worse and Episode III was the biggest turd I've ever seen.

"No f@cking sh`t lady does it sound like I'm ordering a pizza!"

reply

I would add the Robert De Niro/Eddie Murphy comedy SHOWTIME to that list.

Hmm, time to revive an age-old topic! The best movie flop I think I've seen is Army of Darkness. And then there's:
I-spy
The Nutty Professor(not sure if that's a flop)
Starship Troopers
Damn, cant think of any more at the moment.:P

If you mean by flop that a movie was a financial flop, that it didn't make all its money back in theaters, than I have to correct some things (however if you mean by flop, that the critics hated it, don't continue to read):

Wild Wild West wasn't a flop. The budget was $170,000,000 and it made more than $222,000,000 worldwide. Doesn't look like a flop to me. Maybe the critics didn't like it but it sure was a success.
Shawshawk Redemption was a success aswell. It cost $25,000,000 and made $28,341,000 in the US alone. It had a bad start at the box office, that's true, but it went on to be a success.
Someone mentioned Underworld 1 and 2. Both were successful, especially the first one. With a budget of $22,000,000 it made an amazing $21,800,000 on the opening weekend alone. All in all it made nearly $94,000,000 worldwide. Underworld 2 with a budget of $50,000,000 made more than 62,000,000 in the US alone.
Also Flubber back in 1997/1998 was an amazing success. With a budget of $36,000,000 it made nearly 93,000,000 in the US and another 85,000,000 everywhere else.
Star Wars 1,2 & 3 where successful aswell. They maybe didn't break the records of 4,5 & 6 but they still where a success. Especially Star Wars 3.
I know that nobody mentioned it here but most people think Godzilla was a huge flop back in 1998. With a budget of $130,000,000 it made over $379,014,294 worldwide. Critics hate it but it still was a huge financial success

My choices for some of the best flops would be:
1. Serenity - simply put amazing. It didn't make all the budget back in theaters, but with the DVD rentals and everything else it surely did. Anyway it still wasn't a success in theaters.
2. I Spy
3. Poseidon - not Oscar material but still an entertaining movie
4. Mission Imposible 3 - many people might disagree with me on that one, but I still thought it was a great action flick

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie, is not only the best flop ever, it is one of the funniest movies in the history of funny movies

I am all that is man

reply

It's a wonderful life

reply

[deleted]

A lot of people are having trouble with the subject of the thread. My choice is Bernie Mac's Mr. 3000, which made almost no money and probably sank his career. It was a great movie and absolutely did not fall into formula sports movie cliches.

reply

I saw Reindeer Games for the first time recently. I didn't mind it. some ok scenes of action

reply

I liked all these when they came out, but haven't seen some of them in awhile to see how they hold up.

Hudson Hawk
The Mist
The Island
Screamers
Eight Legged Freaks
Mars Attacks
Evolution
Clue
Monster Squad

"Carol Anne, go into the light"!

1. The Man (Eugine Levy/Samuel L. Jackson)
2. Seed of Chucky
3.Gigli
4. Showtime (DeNiro/Eddie Murphy)
5. The Hulk (not the Edward Norton one)

The list just goes on. Basically any movie that Eddie Murphy plays like 10 different characters in ca be added to the list.
