Bad Hungarian

I am a Hungarian, and couldn't stop laughing when Owen Wilson attempted to speak Hungarian. It was understandable, however, god awful. Anybody else who speaks magyar and found that funny (or sad) write down your opinion.

reply

hey dude im from Hungary too

reply

im also hungarian and owen wilson well he's accent was embarasing.nagyon ros volt.

reply

"Végre valaki mondot valamit eröl."

(For those who can't understand)
"Finally, someone said something about this"

Kurva borzasztó volt... I'd say a horse's ass would have done a better job. But nevertheless provided one of the few comic highlights.

reply

I was watching 'I Spy' with one of my friends the other day and he says that Owen Wilson sounded accurate when speaking Hungarian. I told him it wasn't but what am I to do?

Nem mindegy, ha az egész film egy kalap kaka?
(It doesn't matter, the whole film sucked.)

reply

[sorry no accents] ha kritizalni szeretnetek valakinek a magyarjat akkor legyszives irjatok le a mondani valot helyesen. Es forditsatok jol szinten. [making comment about hungarian spelling] anyways, not like I am bitter, just stating...but it was funny too, one of those things only us hungarians can really understand, but even my best friend who is canadian and only knows a few hungarian words picked it up. like the "igen igen, olcso" that he keeps repeating while the subtitles go on about him asking for a basement suit and all. :)

reply

Az én barátom nem beszél magyarul de aszt hiszi hogy én furcsa vagyok mert érdekel nekem hogy beszél valaki magyarul.

Translated: My friend doesn't speak Hungarian but he thinks that I'm weird because I care about how somebody speaks Hungarian.

I seriously am shocked at the horrible linguistic skills of an actor. Owen Wilson, only had to learn a few words in Hungarian and he messed up, royally at that. They should hire people to teach actors how to speak different languages, or offer guidance on how to.

reply

LOl man i totally agree...its on tv now and my 'rents and i are laughing our butts off....no one can be THAT bad....well i guess he is or he was just way too arrogant to learn. Nevertheless i liked the movie. And man i miss my country, whenever i wanna get homesick i watch it. Its beautiful isnt it? [I mean of course there may be better ones, but still in it's own way, no?]

reply

yes i is and i miss it to want to visit in the summer

reply

i get to visit home every summer :)

reply

I might be going back to Hungary this summer to visit my relatives.
It would be great!

I remember sitting in a traffic jam when they were filming this as we lived in Budapest at the time. They almost closed down the entire city just to film this (Same as when we had Madonna filming her Evita sequence).

Apart from the Hungarian - I understand a bit - I find the location jumps hilarious when they make it look like 200 metres and the places are kilometres apart, or turning off at intersections where there is NO way you can do this during normal traffic patterns. Interesting.

Anyone thinking of visiting: it's well worth it!!! Budapest is a great city, not only because of the incredibly beautiful women, but also because of the sites and the architecture. The mix between hyper-modern and old-fashioned. Action all the time.

reply

Are there any other movies that feature Hungary as prominently as 'I Spy'?

reply

Yea I beleive Underworld was filmed their.

reply

If where already on this topic, im totally angry that many films get Hungarian totally wrong, as it would be some slavish language, but no, because its finnougrian.
Like in Ed Wood eg, where Lugosi speaks like a russian, the same with "Chicago". One of the prisoners was supposed to be hungarian, but she spoke also, like some slavish person.
But what infuriated me the most was in Monty Pythons "And now for something completely different", where Cleese didnt just have a slightly different english accent as a hungarian, but the worst was when Terry replied in some slavish language! I mean, when you make a joke out of something you should get the featured language right.
And apart from that, its like people dont know *beep* about Hungary, and that is depressing.

Can any of use Magyars tell me, what Owen Wilson's character's supposed to say, and write it in proper Magyar with all the diacritics etc.?

I'm in Bratislava at the moment, and after mastering the Slovak language, I might start learning the Magyar language, since I find it very interesting, not just linguistically but also historically, a small Uralic language island in the middle of many I-E languages. (Germanic, Slavic and Romance).

reply

Ye! Magyarorszag! I am a hungarian trapped in Toronto! Magical Magyars...Many movies are filmed in budapest and are suppose to represent other better known cities! (Prague, Paris, Vienna, Berlin etc...) And there should be more hype for hungarian movies, especially Kontrol and Fateless.

reply

haha and valami amerika...anyways...Owen's character is supposed to request a basement suit which is "egy alagsori szobat kerek" {without accents} instead he keeps repeating the words igen igen (yes yes) and olcso (cheap)

Judith
then I'll tell them I'd rather have you, than a country, language or history

reply

szar vót, na. De pont ezért élvezhettük vmennyire is...

i'm not hungarian, but i had the honor of living there for three months in 2000. as a matter of fact, i fell in love with budapest so much that i promised that if i ever got married, i would bring my wife to budapest, stay at the hyatt, and have coffee in the cafe that has a great view of the lanchid (chain or lion bridge as we tourists called it) bridge....that came true in 2002....but cut owen some slack. hungarian is an extremely difficult language!! i was delighted when most of the people spoke excellent english.....i hope to re-visit soon!!!

There was no dialect coach in the credits (at least the ones listed on imdb), so where do you suppose he learned as much as he did?

Have to watch this one...wanna see Owen Wilson speak Hungarian

"Spy" with Melissa McCarthy is set in Budapest, too.
And at the Balaton.

And "The Martian" was shot in the brand-new building in the center (The Whale):
It's NASA in the film.
