Why in the HECK where they arguing over CAKE??!!

This is one thing I never got about this movie. They were both sitting at a table arguing over CAKE.
Alex: You know what you're problem is? You wanna have your cake and eat it too
Madison: Alex...you know that makes no sense..I mean I have some cake...and then I eat it! You're trying to say I can't do that?
Alex: ok..it's just a saying, you can't have your cake and eat it too!
Madison: Sure you can.
Alex: Ok why are you saying you can when you can't?! I mean everybody knows you cant. Madison: I'm saying you can because everyone gets it wrong, what you mean to say is you cant eat your cake and have it too, now that you can't have.
Alex: Hmmm I never thought of it that way, you cant eat your cake and have it too. except... Madison: What do you mean except?! There's no except!!
Alex: Just hear me out for a sec, if I eat my cake it's in my stomach right?
Madison: Unless it's on your blouse yes!
Alex: so isn't that the same as having it?
Madison: In a manner of speaking.....
Alex: I wanna talk to you more about this later.....
Seriously?! A whole 20 minutes of arguing about cake? Who wrote the script?

Haha! More like 1-2 minutes of arguing, but I never really understood why that was part of the script. It served no purpose. I'm guessing they were just rambling and the filmmakers decided to keep it in the film.
