Anybody Remember "The Rock"?

That wasn't very good and it had Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, and Ed Harris.
I think I will be quite fine if only only see one movie about breaking INTO Alcatraz in this lifetime.

I remember The Rock. It was a loud, badly edited, and terribly scripted "Dynamic Action Spectacular". It had a dynamite premise, using a prison as a terrorist stronghold and the heroes who must break in, and fine performances by Nick Cage, Sean Connery, and especially Ed Harris as the morally bound antagonist. While far from sewage, The Rock could, and I feel should, be remade or reworked to better realize the excellent concept of Die Hard Behind Bars

Which brings us to Half Past Dead. Yes, it does take place in a prison. Yes, pseudo-terrorists break in and commandeer the place. Yes, it turns into a Die Hard decendant. That where the similarities to The Rock end. Note one of the three was really a joint similarity to Die Hard, hallowed be its name. Half Past Dead is different in many, non-nitpicking ways:

1. The heroes don't have to break in, and the other prisoners hold off the terrorists with Seagal(for some of the film, at least)

2. The terrorists are after money and the man who can find it, and want to leave as soon as possible.

3. Seagal knows nothing of the prison structure and does none of The Rock's trademark room-to-room questing, nor does he care about anything in the prison aside from the hostages, i.e. no bomb bullstuff

Any other similarities that Half Past Dead and The Rock have in common, they share with Die Hard and its millions of imitators/successors.

Funny thing is that this is actually the script that wasn't made as The Rock. And i'm really glad that it wasn't! This movie sucks big time compared to that movie.
